Hornets capture major softball win over Stratford By Phil Clark Lady Her nets softball scored one of their most impressive regu lar season wins in several years Aug. 26. The stands were completely full with parents and students spilling over and lin ing the fences around the stadium at the BMS football field. The sizable crowd was gathered to watch every middle school eighth grade team in the county play a cou ple of quarters of football. Peny shared the sidelines with Feagin Mill and opened up in their game playing offense. Tyler Lawhorn, who led the 7th grade Panthers last year to the finals for the Houston County Middle School county title, started at quarterback. Bth grade coach John Warlick said the Panthers had much work to do to get back to the county cham pionship game. “We were expecting a little more out of our defense, but everybody there was kind of rusty,” he said. “Other schools are look ing a little stronger than they did last year, probably because of the rezoning." Peny faces Bonaire at the Bonaire stadi um Sept. 15. Game time for the 7th graders is 3:30, with the Bth grade following at 5. The first-ever jamboree format was con sidered a success. Athletic Directors from the middle schools in the county will be considering adding the 7th graders to the format next year and moving the Bth grade games to a evening time slot. The Hornets also learned another lesson in this inning. With two outs and two runners on base, Todd hit a bouncer back to the mound. Instead of conced ing the out, Todd ran hard toward first, and Stratford’s first baseman Allison Gaudet dropped the ball. One run scored on that play, and the Lady Hornets went on to score four more before the Eagles could retire them. After Todd’s hustle allowed her to reach base, Burdeshaw bounced to shortstop, but the Eagles misplayed the bouncer, Rachel Moore scoring. Bar rett then drilled a long dou ble off the base of the left field fence to score two more run. Barrett moving to third on the throw to the plate. Barrett then scored on a sin gle by Peake to plate the fifth run of the inning and put the Lady Hornets up be a 10-3 score. Stratford scored two in the fifth and one in the sev enth, but it was not enough to deny the Lady Hornets the win, running their record to 4-2 for the season, 1-1 in region lAAA.
