It seemed as if every middle school fan in
the county was gathered Aug. 28 at
Bonaire Middle School for the first-ever
middle school football jamboree.
The stands were completely full with
parents and students spilling over and lin
ing the fences around the stadium at the
BMS football field. The sizable crowd was
gathered to watch every middle school
eighth grade team in the county play a cou
ple of quarters of football.
Peny shared the sidelines with Feagin
Mill and opened up in their game playing
offense.
Tyler Lawhorn, who led the 7th grade
Panthers last year to the finals for the
Houston County Middle School county
title, started at quarterback. Although
Perry did not score any of the touchdowns,
the combination team won easily, outscor
ing their opponents 30-6.

With two weeks left before their season
opener against Bonaire. Bth grade coach
John Warlick said the Panthers had much
work to do to get back to the county cham
pionship game.
“We were expecting a little more out of
our defense, but everybody there was kind
of rusty,” he said. “Other schools are look
ing a little stronger than they did last year,
probably because of the rezoning."
Peny faces Bonaire at the Bonaire stadi
um Sept. 15. Game time for the 7th graders
is 3:30, with the Bth grade following at 5.
The first-ever jamboree format was con
sidered a success. Athletic Directors from
the middle schools in the county will be
considering adding the 7th graders to the
format next year and moving the Bth grade
games to a evening time slot.

Amber Hunnicutt's
grounder to first scored Bar

that was all the offense West
field could muster against
Stratford's Christie Cantrell.
Milly Richardson had two
hits and drove in four runs
for Stratford.

singles. With two out, Tod'
laced a triple to left-cente
field to score Bennett an
Thompson and give the Lad
Hornets the lead, and th
momentum.
Stratford battled bac
with three in their half of th
second, but another bij
five-run inning in the fourtn
gave Westfield a lead Strat
ford never threatened.
The Hornets also learned
another lesson in this
inning. With two outs and
two runners on base, Todd
hit a bouncer back to the
mound. Instead of conced
ing the out, Todd ran hard
toward first, and Stratford’s
first baseman Allison
Gaudet dropped the ball.
One run scored on that play,
and the Lady Hornets went
on to score four more before
the Eagles could retire them.
After Todd’s hustle
allowed her to reach base,
Burdeshaw bounced to
shortstop, but the Eagles
misplayed the bouncer,
Rachel Moore scoring. Bar
rett then drilled a long dou
ble off the base of the left
field fence to score two more
run. Barrett moving to third
on the throw to the plate.
Barrett then scored on a sin
gle by Peake to plate the fifth
run of the inning and put
the Lady Hornets up be a
10-3 score.
Stratford scored two in
the fifth and one in the sev
enth, but it was not enough
to deny the Lady Hornets
the win, running their
record to 4-2 for the season,
1-1 in region lAAA.
