Perry Panthers seek region softball playoffs
Br ALUNSKENT
Stuckey
says Coach Kristi Horsting is
the best coach she has ever
had. Stuckey ought to know.
That's because Stuckey, a
senior softball player has
had four coaches in her four
years at Perry High.
In the past the Perry pro
gram has struggled. But
now, with Horsting in the
midst of her first season at
the Perry helm, the playoffs
are a definite possibility
looming in the future.

mistakes. The team' that has hurt us
this season has been Perry."
Collins called the game against Lamar
a “good team effort." He was also
pleased with quarterback Dontrell
Green’s performance, saying Green is
"giving us a chance and that is all wc
can ask for."
Dodge has one of the strongest teams
in the region, maybe the state and with
their huge win over Manchester, they
are in the driver's seat. But their sched
ule, like Perry s is tough.
“It's Just a tough region," said Collins.

went over on first down for
anotner score, trie Hornets
thus scored twice within a
span of 36 seconds to take a
28-7 halftime lead.
Skinner, the junior place
kicker, connected for five
straight during the game
after his streak of 27 straight
was snapped when he hit
the upright during the Tat
tnall game a week earlier.
Skinner has now connected
successfully on 31 of his last
32 extra point tries.
Unlike the fast moving
first half in which Westfield
had the ball for eight pos
sessions and Tiftarea seven,
the second half was domi

Rhe math involved in the
playoff process is still a little
complicated. It is easier to
say Perry has two games this
week, one against West Lau
rens and one against Dodge
County. Win both and their
on their way. Win one and
then that pesky math comes
into the picture.
The game against the
Indians Sept. 16 will be a
rematch against the Dodge
County team Perry played
last week. Perry traveled to
Eastman and beat Dodge
County 13-7 Sept. 7.
County is a good solid football team. The
toughness of the region doesn’t take
away from the fact has a good
football program and whupped us."
“But we have a good football team,
too,” added Collins. "Too good of a team
to be 0-2. It tests your character and
shows what your made of. With us 0-2
and Dodge 2-0 is not the scenario I
would pick to go over to Eastman, but
its the one we’ve got.
"We are just one game down in the
region. It is not time to write us off, or
throw in the towels," Collins said.
“1 can’t pick the guarantee the out
trol. The Panthers kept the
ball for six minutes during
their openinc drive of the
nair, curnaxea Dy a one-yard
Pate touchdown midway
through the third quarter.
The Hornets, on the other
hand, had the ball for just
13 offensive plays in the
final 24 minutes, with Walk
er scoring on a 36-yarder for
his fourt h of the game with
nine seconds left in the third
quarter.
Tiftarea’s second long pos
session of the hall, a five
minute drive from their own
31 to the Westfield five ended
when freshman Trav Kemp
recovered a Derek Grist fum
ble at the nine yard line.
The Hornets ran out the
final 23 seconds to take a

According to Horsting,
Dodge made a handful of
mistakes but the Panthers
high score was not due as
much from capitalizing on
those errors than it was the
Panthers performance at the
plate. “I am really proud of
the girls," said Horsting, “We
came out hitting the ball.
Our first three batters got on
base and then all scored."
The Panther went up 4-1 in
first inning of play.
Leaders against Dodge
included Sherry Nipper,, who
went 4-4, with 2 RBI, Sarah

“It was a good hitting
game for us. We seemed to
hit the ball in the hole,
whether we found hdles or
made holes. We hit a couple
long flies over the their
heads. This time of the year
when your opponents have
your hitting stats, you have
to hit where you normally
don’t," Horsting said.
Perry downed Bleckley
County last week 8-3.
The game went scoreless
until top of the fourth when
Nipper hit a home run that
scored Herald and herself.
Stephanie Stocks went 2-3

Sept. 16. the Panthers will
host Dodge County in their
last regular season home
game at Rozar Park. The
night’s activities will also
include senior night, which
will be a salute to the three
seniors on the team.
“Dodge County. That
game is important to us in
continuing our season. The
girls want to beat Dodge but
they will be fired up too. We
won’t lay down and die, we
will be fighting for it,"

Perry enters the last week
of regular play Vith a 15-5
record; 5-1 in the region
with their only loss coming
early season against West
Laurens.
“These girls are just really
playing together well. It is
really exciting. One of the
great things for them is
hearing comments in the
hall, like good job, or nice
win. It helps pump them up
and get them ready for the
next game,” Horsting said.
Perry’s varsity is not only
the team having a successful
season. The JV won both
their games last week giving
them a 9-2 record and will
finish their season this week.
“I am really looking for
ward to the next two years
with this JV group. They just
don’t give up, don't quit
fighting. Some of the girls
that weren’t hitting at the
beginning are peaking now,”
Horsting said.
“Our game against Dodge
will be a big night for us. We
are hoping for a big crowd.
Community support means
a lot to us."
The JV starts off at 4:30
Thursday evening at Rozar
Park with the Varsity follows
at 6:00. Senior night activi
ties will be held between the
two games.
