CRACK OF THE BAT Westfield looks for a hit during
recent slow-pitch softball action.
Panthers
starting with the opening
kickoff.
Panther Phillip Gentry
kicked to Dodge. Thomas
fielded the ball at the 3-yard
line and returned to the 42.
Thomas was held on the first
play by Panthers’ Morris
Clarington and Fred Ridley,
who through out the game
made many key tackles. A
third-and-7 situation turned
into a third-and-2 when
Perry was called for offsides.
Thomas continued to run
the ball and ended up in the
end zone shortly.
Periy fumbled the ball on
the first play from scrim
mage. and recovered at the
Panther 2-yard line.
Collins, faced with third
down and 28, yards,
replaced quarterback Don
trell Green with Ronnie Col
lier who attempted to throw
ball but overthrew Ingram
and the ball landed out of
bounds.
Gentry punted and Dodge
County's Washington ran the
ball into the end zone but a
penalty brought the ball
back to the 40-yard line.
Moments later, early in
the second quarter, Thomas
scored on a 1-yard run.
The point after touchdown
kick was wide right.
The Panthers took the ball
on the 20 yard line. An up
the middle throw to Michael
Robinson complete to the
50-yard line gave the Pan
thers good field position. The
Panthers were unable to
capitalize on it and punted to
Dodge County.
Thomas ran the ball sever
al times and was finally
brought down hard by Fred
Ridley putting Dodge Countv
in a fourth and-2 situation
and forcing Thomas to leave
the game for a few minutes.
The two teams swapped
possession of the ball on the
next series. Perry fumbled at
the Panther 25. Dodge recov
ered. but fumbled on the
next play. Perry fumbled a
second time, and Washing
ton picked up the ball for
Dodge County.
On second-and-goal from
the 8-yard line, Clarington,
on a tough tackle, brought
Washington down two yards
Hornets
Walker scored his second
touchdown of the game and
12th of the season on the
Hornets’ first play from
scrimmage and Skinner
made it 28-6 with 6:49 left
in the third quarter.
For the second game this
season, Westfield coach
Ronnie Jones used 12 dif
ferent backs to carry the
ball. Walker's 125 yards put
him over the 500-yard
mark for the season after
four games.

In game one, Stratford
broke a 1-1 tie with four runs
in the fourth inning, and
increased the lead to 9-1 in the
fifth before Westfield exploded
for eight in their half of the
fifth, tying the game at 9-all
after five innings. But Stratford
picked up two runs in both the
sixth ana seventh innings for a
13-10 first game victory.
short of the end zone. Wash
ington ran off to the right
side and scored. This time
the kick was good and Perry
was down 27-0 with 3:47 left
in the half.
Before the half ended.
Perry put some points on
their own on the board.
Donovan Kendrick ran the
ball down to near the 10-
yard line, putting the Pan
thers in scoring range but
Dodge County shut Perry
down and the Panthers had
to settle for a 31-yard field
goal by Gentry.
Gentry added 3 more
points for the Panthers dur
ing the opening possession
of the third with a 22- yard
field goal.
Collins referred to the
kicking game against Dodge
as one of the “highlights for
us right now."
“Phillip has done a good
job for two years, in part
because of getting a constant
snap from Jerry Drazny.
The protection is there.”
Collins said.
Perrv will travel to the west
side of the state Sept. 24 to
take on the Manchester Blue
Devils. Manchester enters
the game coming off a 23-7
win over rival Harris County
last week. Manchester has
one loss in 4AA region play,
to Dodge County, 21 -0.
Panther fans traveling to
the game will want to keep
their eye on William Hunt,
who picked up his fourth
blocked punt of the season
against Harris. While the
Blue Devil offense has strug
gled to keep possession of
the ball during the season,
the special teams play has
been considered key in both
their wins this year.
Manchester rushed for
269 yards against Harris,
but also exhibited an inabili
ty to hold onto to the foot
ball. The Blue Devils fum
bled the ball six times.
“Manchester is a tough
football team, only lost two
games at home in the last six
years or so," said Collins.
