Giving a womans touch to a traditionally male profession By Charlotte Perkins Ho*a Jckjknai. Staff You may nave seen Carol Hawk at work a week or two ago, sitting cross legged on the sidewalk in downtown Perry, putting the final touches on a win dow'sill, or lugging a ladder across the street to put it in the back of her "ugly truck." Or you may pass her on the highway some after noon as she hurries to pick up her kids at Kings Chapel Elementary School. She’s a busy, working morn like so many others, but what makes Carol Hawk unique is her choice of professions. She’s a painter. And, no, she doesn't paint on canvas. Dressed in her own per sonal “uniform" of faded denim, her dark hair tucked inside a “Nascar" cap. Carol Hawk paints houses, offices, interiors, exteriors. At one time she even painted battle ships for a living. The child of a military family which traveled around the world. Hawk learned early to be self reliant and make her own choices. “I got into painting because 1 tiad to support myself’ she explained. “I liked being outdoors, and it was a way to make a living without being in an office." At first, she managed to get hired as a laborer, and as the first woman painter in the Columbus area, she had a struggle to gain acceptance in a male-dom inated field. "The men gave me fits,” she said. She stuck it out though, partly through the help of an older man who sympa thized, taught her the right way to use .a brush and helped her learn the ropes.- A few years later, she was off to Mississippi where she worked at a Pascagoula shipyard, painting Navy destroyers. She continued in her chosen profession after moving to Elko 11 years ago. marrying Dale Hawk and starting a family and a new life with him. That life was centered around his daughter, Brooke, and their children together. Maybe you’ve seen her, carrying those heavy cans of paint, climbing up a ladder, or carefully painting a window sill (without masking tape ) while she listens to country music and sorts out her feelings. Hawk also got involved with the community tak ing an active role in the Kings Chapel PTO, and joining the Akikta Club at the encouragement of her mother-in-law, Vivian Hawk. She kept on painting. Over the years, she has built a steady business specializing in painting which requires a steady hand and a meticulous approach. “1 like to paint trim," she said, explaining that if she has to hire help for a big job, she does the “brush work" while the others use rollers. She gets most of her jobs through word-of-mouth and referrals from local paint suppliers. She said that it’s an advantage to be female in some cases. "Women living alone often prefer to have a woman painter in their homes,” she said. On the other hand, she still occasionally runs into men who aren’t so sure about hiring a woman for a painting job. "It’s hard to believe,” she said, "but it’s almost 2000 and there are still chauvin ists around." Despite some wear and tear on her knees and some muscle aches from carrying those five-gallon buckets of paint around. Hawk enjoys her work. “I like to change things," she explained. “I even paint at home. I painted all the doors to my home with yel low It's good thqsapy when I’m upset." •, That "therapy" has been crucial in the last few months, because Carol Hawk and her family have had a tragic loss. Dale Hawk died in April, 1999, after battling the ravages of Crohn’s disease for more than a year. A strong man, a ware house operator and “workaholic." Dale Hawk wound up hospitalized for many months in Atlanta, i aH|I sBBBr ' t.. / ' but his death, which fol lowed a surgical procedure that was supposed to give him a fighting chance, still caught the family off guard. With loving support from her mother-in-law, ("She’s just the best!"). Hawk is now taking on the chal lenge of being a single par ent and the sole provider for her children,. One advantage of being self-employed, she said, is that she can plan her day around her children’s needs. She’s up early to drive them to school, and she “knocks off about 3 p.m. so she can pick them up and take them to soccer practice, gymnastics class es and other activities. In between those times, she’s working for a living paint brush in hand. Maybe you’ve seen her. carrying those heavy cans of paint, climbing up a lad der, or carefully painting a window sill (without mask ing tape) while she listens to country music and sorts out her feelings. That’s Carol Hawk, painting “with a woman's touch.” The City of Perry Governing Authority do hereby announce that the millage rate will be set at a meeting to be held on October 5,1999 at 6:00 pm.
