Thomas returns as head coach of the :ross Country team, after a four-year absence. It is an addition to his busy schedule Thomas seemed happy to make. “Every time I have had the opportunity to oe around different kids in different sports, it just gives me a greater sense of appreci ation for the kids we have at this school," rhomas said. It was Thomas who began the program at Perry about nine years ago. Coach Robert Zell, took over from Thomas about three years ago, but Zell left Perry High this summer and Thomas found himself back in the familiar position. The Perry boy's team has had two meets so far this season and has won both. During the first, held at Westside High School in Macon, Perry competed against four schools; Westside, Dodge County. Mary Persons, and Georgia Military College Prep School. The Panthers hosted the second meet, leaving the facilities at Morningside Ele mentary for the new Perry Middle School. 'They have all that space," said Thomas. “ and were nice enough to allow us to run Perry Middle wins grid openers By ALLINE KENT Home Journal Sports Perry Middle School opened their season with two wins Sept. 15 as both teams defeated Bonaire Mid dle in the first week of the Panthers football season. Markese Howard scored the first touchdown of the year for the 7th grade team on a 46-yard run and Ricky Harris added the extra point on a 3-yard run. Harris scored again dur ing the half on a 9-vard run and added the extra point on another 3 yard run putting the Panthers up 16-0 at the half. The Panther offense opened the second half with two quick touchdowns both on runs within the 20 by Harris. Harris finished the day with a 46 yard touch down run. The 7th grade team did “very well" against Bonaire, according to coach Leslie Belcher. “Although special teams are still a concern, we are working hard on the kick ing area. Panther Randy Whiddon was the individ ual winner in both races coming in first out of 49 in the first meet and first out of 29 in the second. Thomas said when he started the pro gram one of his purposes was to get his basketball players in shape before basket ball season started. Two Panther basket ball players, senior John Millender and junior Andrew Scoggins, have consistently been the second and third placers during the first two meets. Looking ahead to the region meet. Thomas said for Perry to make a splash in the region, he would need the same consis tently in the fourth and fifth placers. The region meet is Oct. 26 at Bleckley County High School. The top two teams qualify for state competition. Perry also has a girls team, but so far this season has not had members enough to field a team for competition. Senior, Teryn Burch qualified for state.as an indi vidual in her first three seasons, and Thomas is hoping that she will be able to return to state as an individual qualifier again this season. Leading tacklers for the Panthers were David Alford 8: Tion Kendrick 6; and Jarrell Gary and Tyler Lawhorn with 4 each. Perry’s score 36-14, pleased Shelton because all lack of hitting throughout the entire game. “Jane Gore pitched pretty good, but we our hitting was not consistent,” Harri son said. Sydney Simpson went 2- 3, Amy Collins 1-3 , and Samantha Bartlett 1-2. In the win against the Warriors, Harrison’s first four batters batted almost perfect; Samantha Bartlett, Jane Gore, Sidney Simpson 39 of his players got a chance to take the field.
