When Ron said the whole apartment, his huge smile made all of the hard work worth while. We got a call from my cousin's daugh ter Renee Slappey from Pizza Hut and she had 3 very sweet older ladies (The Johnsons) who were exhausted and could find no place to stay. It was 11:30 p.m. and we got dressed and met them at the apartments and checked them in. The next morning they brought me the most beautiful peach colored roses. We had only one cloud on our horizon the whole time although we were exhausted. We held out last two apart ments for some nurses from Savannah. The people at the Warner Robins Hospital called and asked if they could have them. This was at 4 p.m. and I told them to send them on over and I would hold them but that I closed at 5 p.m. At 6:30 p.m., 1 was still waiting and after many calls to the hospital, these women called me and said they were on the road in Warner Robins but that they were going to stop and have dinner and they would be over later. I told them that 1 had been waiting for them since 4 p.m. and that 1 had not had anything but snacks all day and that I had to eat because ! was a diabetic. She very rudely informed me that she had worked 30 hours and that they were hungry. I told her that I had turned down needy families lor her and Uiat 1 would hold the apartment for 30 more minutes and then it was gone. I was told by one of my residents that they showed up at 7:20 p.m. 1 was gone. It upset me because it would have been two more apartments that needy fami lies could have used. Thankfully all of the other people from Savannah were wonderful and so were our residents who helped them as well. Having lived through hurricane Hugo in Charleston, S.C.. I cannot tell you how nice it was to have the opportunity to pay back some of the fantastic help we received in that terrible time. I can truly say that I am proud of our efforts to serve the evacuees and that 1 am very proud to be a resident of Perry. Perry is a small town with a big heart and being from a town well known for it’s hospitality. 1 can tell you that I have never regretted my move to Perry. In fact on a recent visit back to Charleston, I could hardly wait to get back home to Perry (Now my hometown). I know for a fact that the people from The Houston Home Journal, the people from the Welcome Center, the people from the Chamber of Commerce, the people from the Shelter, as well as many others all put in a great effort to give aid and support to people who came. They were not only from Savannah but from Florida and other cities in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, etc. Perhaps the Mayor should know that the incident of price gouging was reported to the police from a Perry citizen from the Welcome Center He should ATTENTION Kmart Shoppers On Page 1 of our Kmart Sept. 26, 1999 Electronic Pullout Section, we •how the Sega Dreamcast Video Game System as 35,000 available per store. SC know that the people involved were sent to me and had a beautiful full corporate one bedroom apartment fully dec orated and furnished for only a $45 clean up fee. They were very grateful even if he is not. (For that $45. we cleaned up the whole apartment, Febreezed the smoke odors out of it and washed all the sheets and linen, carried off garage.) The Mayor may have apolo gized to his people for the way that they were treated but he should apologize to the citi zens of Perry who took those ungrateful people in and cared from them during the storm. It was Savannah who dumped two busloads of prisoners into our shelters with the other people without warning to Perry. This could have been disastrous! How could they mayor have made an informed decision on the validity of these complaints when he wasn’t even here? I really feel that the ones complaining were a very small number. As I have stated I have received many thanks from the ones who were with us including flowers from two families and nice letters. As I write this ! have Just received a thank you card from the family I earlier mentioned with the older gen tleman with foot problems. It says “We thank you so deeply for being the angels you were during our time of distress and need. From the Cum mings Family." Believe me we too are so Sateful for the wonderful milies who stayed with us and should we have another storm they are truly welcomed back if we have openings. The Mayor, is another story. I think he should get his facts straight before he com ments. That is only common decency. Talk about biting the had that feeds you! He owed the town of Perry a debt of gratitude and an apology. I know I can speak for most of the Perry citizens when I say that we were Add to help our fellow Georgians as well as the other families in need and would do so again should the situation arise. Dollie Geary Perry Hope to return to Perry Editor: My husband and 1 were so upset when we read in the Savannah newspaper of, the Macon Riverside Drive Walnut Street Log Cabin Drive Shurling Drive Pio Nono Avenue Hartley Bridge Rd. 722-6200 722-6100 722-6400 ?22-6500 722-6600 722-6700 Mtmber FDIC people who were at the Ag Center that looted and were disorderly. We hope to return again some day. Phyllis Day Savannah Heartfelt Thanks Editor: I am a resident of Savannah. Georgia and I was appalled at the news I heard about what happened in your city during the hurricane evacuations. I want to apologize for what my fellow Savannah residents did to your city. Unfortunately, the bad ele ment of our city somehow made their way to Perry. We are not all like the ungrateful animals you had to put up with! We are very grate ful for the arm of hospitality you extended to all evacuees from the storm. Again, I am truly sorry. A heartfelt thanks you to you, your citizens and the Red Cross volunteers that gave of themselves to make others comfortable. Melissa Bond Savannah Help when needed most Editor: Recently my family and I had to evacuate due to Hurri cane Floyd. With the sudden onslaught of evacuees search ing for available lodging, we found ourselves virtually stranded. On a wing and a prayer (and also my last hope of finding lodging after driving m excess of 12 hours) ! stopped in at the Perry Wel come Center. I had pretty much given up on trying to find a hotel room since it was late Wednesday morning. I asked the very helpful recep tionist if she knew if anything was available in their area. I was in luck! Just minutes before she had received a call from Dolly who manages the Hamptons of Perry apart ments. There were completely furnished executive apart ments to rent for folks like us. Never before had I received such a warm and open wel come from a virtual stranger. Of course, we dashed over after a brief phone conversation and were so pleased to find that not only were the apartments Take the Money and Run. My kids and I rented a great one bedroom apartment for two nights for less than one hundred dollars. Now we. all know that Floyd passed us by. As we were preparing to make our depar ture the following day, Dolly's husband Earl (note- Ron is the Should Perry Parkway have a cement plant? Zoning meeting crucial Editor: Concerned Citizens should attend the zonihg meeting on Oct. 5 1999; at Perry City Hall. Questions should be addressed as to why the zon ing committee would permit an Industrial Plant in this location, which is primarily residential and is in close proximity to the new Perry Middle School. Perry has an Industrial park for these type industries and this is tne proper location for such a production facility. The most important resource of any country or community is its youth, with health being the most impor tant asset of everyone. Every parent with children in school, the school’s manage ment both county and city, with those who will at a later date be sending their chil dren to this sdiool should participate and voice their concerns. If this proposal is allowed, then other big industry and factories would be eligible to develop in our residential area to degrade our land, as well as our quality of life. It is good for a city to make progress and grow but at what expense? Can we as a people afford this kind of development? Citizens who have homes and property in this area would certainly be affected. Property values would go down and trying to retain one’s possessions by increased taxes and legal fees could be very costly. If this zoning is granted the cit izens in the area would have a major loss, both property value and health, not to mention the effect on the environment. The effect qnhealtlj may not be imminent-at first, but could promote Tletrlmenfal correct name of Dolly’s hus band) saw us and remarkably asked if I would like a refund on the second night. I could not believe such kindness when all over the news price gouging was the rule. I also would like to com mend Dr. Westmoreland and his staff for taking in our three cats. They too refunded the conditions over time espe cially to the lungs of our young and older residents. 1 have a granddaughter attending Perry Middle School and I have an interest in prop erty that would Join this industry. I am also concerned about our resident’s welfare and health. I will gladly give my support against the granting of a per mit to bpild an industrial cement plant on the Perry Parkway in Houston County to the residents, schools, com mittee members, or any other personnel who will try and make a difference to save our - property and children. Joseph L. Bacon Sr. Perry Concrete plant ‘ ‘absurd ” Editor: In regard to rezoning the Perry Parkway to industrial to all a concrete plant is com pletely absurd. This type of health hazard need not be put across from a daycare where 65 children will be playing outside. Another day care center is a short dis tance away with 150 children. Just down the street is a new middle school with over 800 children. Across the street is 152 apartments with many children. These children are our future. The dust alone from this plant can put chil dren into an asthma attack or make these children asthmat ic. There is also a new bank across the street that hasn't had a chance to open. Property values will be greatly reduced. Who wants to move to an area where your neighbor will be a concrete plant? Yqu won’t be able to sell your house. With all of the noise, pollution and traffic of concrete trucks coming and going, not to speak of what concrete dust can do to your automobile. I am sure the zoning board and council members would Perry Warner Robins __ Washington Street Watson Boulevard Russell Parkway Future Site 987-0011 929-4145 329-0430 Houston Lake Rd. LINMR extra night we had paid for boarding our cats. Thank you so much Perry. Georgia for being our safe haven in the eye of the storm. All the way home. I kept singing the song "Hello Dolly" in my head. Thank you, Dolly. Laura J. Strieber Savannah, Ga. love to have one of these plants in their backyard, but I’m not into having one in my back yard. When I moved here from Florida, we came to Perry' and bought a home and 11 acres, because we like a small town. But, I also enjoy the accessibil ity to larger towns. So buying property close to the bypass seemed so nice. We are close to the proposed site. We have deer. fox. raccoons, and red tailed hawks, as well as other birds and squirrels. I do not want to lose these. What will this plant do to the wetlands on this property and adjacent properties? It can only damage it. On Channel 13, when the Sept, meeting was canceled, Steve Howard of the City of Perry Engineering Department appeared. He mentioned there was industrial on the parkway already, but he did not men tion that Northrop Corp. is on the other side of 175 where there are no houses. Let them put it there and even better there is an industrial park on the other side of Perry where this type of business is avail able and welcomed. It need not be put next to all of these chil dren and houses. 1 moved here for 4he sereni ty, but if this is what I've got to look forward to, I guess Perry is not taking care of its resi dents or neighbors. If this passes and my health is in jeopardy. 1 will leave Perry as I imagine others will. Business es will close because parents will pull their children out of here. This may take a class action suit for us all to band together and save our quaint little town of Perry. Let's band together and be at the City Hall Oct. 5 for the rezoning meeting. Respectfully, Brenda White.
