Serious bowhunting is at Piedmont Refuge
For serious hunters who
want to get away from other
hunters, you’ll nnd a lot of
elbow during the Piedmont
Refuge hunts. Shell esti
mates the average week end
turn out as only 40 - 50 peo
ple and even less during the
weekdays.
Most of these hunters are
probably “regulars’’ who have
Been visiting the refuge for
years because of its fine
hunting. They know that
despite the large size of the
refuge, the best strategy is to
Bick a location and scout it
loroughly.
Like many Piedmont regu
lars, this writer has been
hunting different sections of
the refuge for more than 30
years. I nave participated in
the archery, primitive
weapons, and gun hunts and
have taken at least one deer
off the property (sometimes
two) in most years.

Also, like many hunters, I
have several places I hunt,
but Piedmont is special
because I have so many fond
memories of trips there over
the years. I love the lay of the
land and I’ve experienced
good success there. Hunting
clubs come and go, but Pied
mont is one of the veiy few
places where 1 can hunt in
the same location I did many
years ago. Many Georgia
hunters share those same
feelings about Piedmont
virtue of their age, they are
not as mentally focused as
older players.
One oi the areas that has
really improved for the 7th
grade Panthers this season is
special teams.
“Our kickoff guy is just
doing great. I can tell nim
where T want the ball, even
tell him the jersey number,
and he is putting it there.
Our coverage is better nur

Early in the game, the Pan

Rumble offense to score first
and run the score to 6-0.
Ricky Harris scored on a
three-yard touchdown run
and also added the extra

Brandon Davis threw a 12-

the extra point with a three

During the archery season
it’s important to look for deer
groceries and the most plen
tiful and appealing to deer in
September are acorns.
Unlike some public hunting
areas that are in various
stages of clear cut regrow
ana tough to hunt, Piedmont
has abundant hardwood
ridges with mature oaks that
will make an avid deer
hunter's heart skip a beat.
Sure the area has plenty of
pine trees and some select
cut tracts, but generally
hunters will be well pleased
with the landscape available
here. The refuge is also dis
sected with numerous clear
running creeks which tumble
over rocky shoals.
Find an active deer creek
crossing with lots of tracks
and you’ll have a good loca
tion for an ambush stand. If
the crossing is near some red
Damien Singletaiy anchored
the Panther defense with
three individual tackles.
Thomas Lawson, Markese
Howard, Christopher El-
Amin, and Brandon Alford
each had 2 individual tackles.
Bernard Askew and
Damien Singletary each
recovered a fumble.
Ricky Harris finished the
day with 107 yards on 16
carries
arandon Davis had 16
yards on seven carries and
was 1 for 5 in the passing
. department with a touch
down pass to Damien Single
tary.
The eighth grade needs to
win at least one more game to
gain a trip to the playoffs.
They also defeated Rumble
last week by a score of 30-6.
The Imps failed to move
the ball during their first pos
session and were forced to
punt.
The kick was flat and the
Panthers scooped it up and
moved it all the way down to the
1-yard line. On the next play.
Rishawn Scott scored a touch
down on a three-yard run.

as the deer will be there.
On Piedmont Refuge the
deer will seek out the cooler
retreats offered by thick
brush and creek bottoms
during the heat of the day. A
map of the refuge is included
in the refuge hunting regula
tions pamphlet and it snows
the locations of Falling, Alli
son, Stalking Head, and
Caney creeks, plus the
refuge has many smaller
feeder drainages.
As mentioned above, find
the groceries (acorns) near

archery season and scout for

Warlick said the Imps “ran
out of steam” while the Pan

during the game. “It was a
very different attitude, very
different performance than
in the game we had against
Feagin Mill," he said.
In the second half, Perry

Because the deer will be
fairly close before you have
the opportunity to release an
arrow and your human
scent might give away your
presence, consider putting
your stand up at least 15
feet. Slightly higher is better,
but don t forget to wear your
safety belt. Even better, use
a belt that distributes the
stress of the fall to your legs,
chest and arms, like tne
“Seat of the Pants” brand.
Since a deer's main inter

procreation, stay away from

use food-basea scents, sug

is a good cover scent that's
not too strong on your nose.
He also recommends that
hunters wash their clothes
