She received her bachelor of science degree in education from Auburn University, and is a spe cial needs preschool teacher at the Butler Early Childhood Center in Macon. The groom-elect is the grandson of Mrs. J. C. Saunders and the late J. C. Saunders, and the late Mr. and Mrs. Mark W. Massey, all of Moultrie. He is a 1999 graduate of Houston County High School and will begin basic training in the U.S. Air Force on Nov. 16. Headstart Awareness Month Headstart focuses on basic learning needs of students By Torey Jolley Home Journal Stajtt “Headstart is 34 years old. Every October, we observe Headstart aware ness. We try to help the community be more aware of the Headstart programs that are available," said Aretha Neal. Family Com munity Partnership Coor dinator. The Perry Headstart is located along Tucker Road. It currently serves 34 stu dents, ages 3-5 years old. It is one of 22 Headstart programs in 15 counties. According to Neal, 10 percent of the program’s students are dealing with a disability. “We have an active wait ing list, and encourage families with a disabled child to enroll him or her into the program," said Rosa Hammock, Headstart Center Supervisor. The program uses a cre ative curriculum to prepare children for school. “It gives the children a head start on how to learn," said Hammock. The program focuses on teaching the basic begin nings to the youngsters. “The children learn colors, shapes, numbers, letters, ana other important lessons.
