Don’t forget special day designations
when planning Thanksgiving deer hunts
If you're not a bow or black
powder hunter, The “Real" deer
season opened Oct. 23. That's
when the modern firearms sea
son kicked off and the
prospects are for another good
season.
Throughout the 1998 deer
hunting season, more than
316.000 hunters harvested
427,000 deer, according to the
Georgia Department of Natural
Resources, Wildlife Resources
Division. WRD estimates deer
populations to be over one mil
lion for the 1999-2000 hunting
season and Georgia hunters
have another deer hunting sea
son to look forward to.
“Hunters have an excellent
opportunity to harvest a deer
this hunting season," said Dan
Forster, .VRD Assistant Chief
of Game Management. “Deer
harvest numbers should be
high due to a number of fac
tors. Reproduction rates were
good because of the mild win
ter, either sex days were
cn. ’ in both the northern
and southern zones, and new
public areas are open during
the 1999-2000 hunting sea
son."
WRD operates more than 80
wildlife management areas
which i provide a variety of
hunting options, including
archery, primitive weapons,
modern firearms, adult-child
hunts, ladies-only hunts, and
hunts for the physically dis
abled.
In order to hunt deer on
Georgia's WMA's, hunters
must possess the appropriate
hunting license(s) and a WMA
stamp.
Central Georgia is blessed
with two top-notch WMA’s,

Dec. 1-4 it’s buck only the first
two days and either sex the
last two days.
On Ocmulgee WMA the area
is open Oct 24-Nov 7 for bucks
only. Then on Nov 24-27 for
the Thanksgiving holidays

deer populations, but the Oaky
Woods WMA deer population
seems to be down from previ
ous years.
During my trips there dur
ing the bow season. I've seen
few deer but lots of wild hogs.
The population should
rebound soon with the limited
either sex hunting which will
increase the doe population.
All deer hunters who pos
sess a harvested deer must
have both a big game license
and a completed Deer Harvest
Information Record indicating
the date and sex of the deer or
the antlerless designation. The
license record is part of the
license carrier card that
hunters receive when purchas
ing a license.
Deer season for firearms
runs from Oct. 23 - Jan. 1 in
the Northern Zone and from
Oct. 23 - Jan. 9 in the South
ern Zone. Hunters should
check the hunting regulations
for either-sex days for individ
ual counties. Antlered bucks
may be harvested in Macon
and Dooly counties only if they
have a minimum outside antler
spread of 15 inches.

Panthers
offensively during the first half
and defensively during the sec
ond half. Perry held the Bull
dogs to only nine first downs in
the entire game and shutdown
their passing game, allowing
only 44 yards passing on the
evening.
Although the win vaulted
the Perry season to only 2-7,
their record hasn’t affected
their home game attendance.
The Panthers played in front of
an enthusiastic full house at
the Pitt Nov. 5.
Perry took the 7-0 lead early
when, after taking the opening
kickoff and driving down field,
Dontrell Green scored on a 1-
yard run. Robert Warren made
the point after touchdown kick.
Collins spoke highly of his
sophomore kicker who had to
pull extra duty Friday evening.
“That was the first game
Robert punted for us," said
Collins. “Ronnie Collier had
been punting before he got
hurt; Robert is really coming
through for us and getting the
job done."
On their next possession,
Macon County took a gamble
on a fourth-and-short situa
tion and turned it into a first
down. A series of short, effec
tive runs followed as the Bull
dogs kept after it, even after
being backed up on a holding
penalty.
On a fourth down gamble,
the Bulldogs, on the four-yard
line, failed to convert and
handed the ball over to the
Panthers.
Trey Green carried the ball
11 yards just as time ran out
in the first quarter. Green, who
didn’t play as a sophomore,
picked up 119 yards against
the Bulldogs.
“He runs hard and gives us
things that we don't have,"
Collins said of Green, a junior.
Michael Robinson scored
just 10 seconds into the sec
ond quarter on a 63-yard
touchdown pass from Dontrell
Middle
“Our defense worked hard,
especially in the overtime peri
od, “ said Belcher. “They had a
sense of urgency."
Latimore agreed adding,
“During the first half, our
defense shut down the half
back from Tabor. As the game
went on. he started running
harder and our defense had to
work harder."
“It was a great game, said
Belcher. "You have to give cred
it to the Tabor Middle School
players and coaches. They were
down 8-0 but came back. “
Leaders praise new county champs
By ALLEVE KENT

Calling them “great repre
sentatives of their school and
our community," Perry Mayor
Jim Worrall was just one of
several people singing the
praises of the 7th grade Coun
ty Football Champions this
week.
“We are proud of the whole
group and what they have
accomplished," the Mayor said.
“Those coaches just do a super
job."
Worrall. drawing on his
experience as a coach at Perry
Middle School many years ago,
knows just how incredible the
accomplishment is and plans,
as mayor of Perry, to recognize
it formally.
“It is already on my agenda
for the city council meeting to
have a resolution drawn up
honoring the team." Worrall
said after the resolution was
passed a presentation would
be made to the school.

Gupton said that he was not

Green. Robert Warren's kick
was again good.
Robinson had three catches
for 100 yards, and is one of
Collins' ‘walking wounded",
playing although he has sus
tained injuries this season.
Perry scored once more
before the half. The third
touchdown was set up by a
Macon County fumble on the
39-yard line. Trqr Green took
the pitch and carried the ball
to the one-yard line and then
up the middle for the score.
Warren added the PAT to give
Perry a 21-0 lead.
During the second half, the
Bulldogs turned to a ground
game and tried to run the ball,
but the Panthers defense held
steady and consistently shut
down the attack.
Perry will travel to Cochran
Nov. 12 for the last game of
this season against the winless
Bleckley County Royals.
Collins called the Royals an
improving football team and
applauded their performance
this season especially against
Dodge.
“They did a good job against
Dodge, which speaks a lot.
They played Dodge as well as
anyone in the region has,"
Collins said.
Collins said that he will
arrive in Cochran expecting to
find Bleckley very motivated.
“They will want to end their
season on a positive note," he
said.
Although the season hasn’t
quite turned out the way any
one expected, Collins
is still holding a positive
attitude about his '99 squad.
"Our numbers are up. and
things are on the upside
around here. Wfc have had
good player participation. I
guess you could call beating
Macon County a moral victory.
We have lost several key play
ers, but people have stepped
into roles."

“The win speaks a lot of the
pride and character of our kids.
Mentally thqy made adjust
ments out on the field. That's
our job, to get them in a posi
tion to be able to do that,"
Belcher said.
“I am proud that these kids
won the championship. But the
thing that makes me even
prouder as a coach is what
came from within these play
ers. They were in a tough spot
and still had the desire to do
better. That will carry them far
in life," he added.
surprised at all about the
young men's accomplishments
stating that he knows the cal
iber of the group.
“These guys are real deter
mined. They had a goal and
they achieved it. They work at
their grades and work on their
_football. “
Gupton said, speaking of
the overtime period in the
championship game said that
the players had a “gut-check".
“Their backs were against the
wall but they reached down
inside and gathered all the
strength they could. They
came through for themselves
and their school."
