Sro«T3 The leaves are changing, the weather is supposed to be turning cooler and that means it is time to watch the Panthers play roundball. Basketball opens in Perry Nov. 20 as the Perry Pan thers host Echols County, a Class A school from Statenville. near Valdosta. Head Coach Carl Thomas is entering his 12th season continued the Perry tradition of winning. During his time as head of the Panther pro gram, Thomas has chalked up three region champi onships and four region run ner-up titles. Perry played for the state title in 1997. With their win in Region 3- AA last year, the Panthers put together their first back to-back titles in 25 years. Gone from the highly suc cessful region winning team are it’s four outstanding ath letes: Dontarrious Thomas. Dannorris Harvey, Dante Holmes and Johnny Watkins, all of whom are playing either football or bas ketball on the college level. “We graduated four starters and lost three things, talent, experience PMS opens basketball play Nov. 17 By ALLINE KENT Home Journal Spokts With football just aver, basketball season starts this week at Perry Middle School. “Because of the length of our football season, we are looking at having three days of practice, Friday. Monday, Tuesday, before our first game Wednesday,” said Coach Leslie Belcher. “We are a week behind everyone else that didn't make it to the football playoffs." “The biggest thing we have to do as coaches is get men tally prepared. The mental challenges are the biggest when you go from football to basketball in a week," he added. With 30 years under his belt as Perry Middle, John Warlick will be at the helm of the Bth grade boys team, while James Lattimore, will take over responsibilities of the 7lh grade team in his first full year as a basketball head coach. Pamela Ware, in her first year at Perry Middle School, takes over the Bth grade girls team and Belcher has the “Insight On Eyesight ” Making “Contact” with the past by Dr. J. Mathis Dixon, Eyesight Associates We like to think we’re as mod em as it gets, so it may surprise you to learn that the concept of contact lenses is almost 500 years old! In 1508, Leonardo de Vinci described contact lenses to correct the refractive error of the cornea. He suggested placing a small half sphere filled with water over the eye. In 1636, Rene Descartes went a step further by proposing the placement of a lens directly onto the cornea. As bleak as it sounds, it is not the worst graduation in Perry history. The 1994 team had five senior starters and a year later, Thomas took his team to a region runner-up title. Because of the lack of experience on this year’s team, Thomas expects more young men to see playing time than last season. “We may have lost four starters, but there are some positives with our team this year. We do have the ability to shoot the ball," he said. “And more depth than we have had in 3 or 4 years." As usual, it is Perry val. Dodge County that con cerns Thomas, his team and Panther fans. The Indians are returning three three 7th grade girls, in his fourth year at Perry Middle School. Belcher, who coached bas ketball on the high school level before coming to the Panthers, spent five years as a girls varsity head coach. While he has worked with the boys program at Pern' Middle in the past, this will be his first year coaching the girls. "Coaching girls used to be a lot different than coaching boys, but not anymore,” said Belcher. “They do a lot of pressing and have full court action where they used to only have half court." This year’s Bth grade girls team won the county cham pionship as 7th graders while the Bth grade boys team finished in 3rd place last year as 7th graders. The season will start Nov. 17 against Rumble. The 7th grade team will play at home with the Bth grade away. Then comes Thanksgiving holidays, with a week off, and then only four games before Christmas holidays. “We try to get them in game shape prior to the hol- refractive power was developed in 1887. All but Johnson are still involved with football since Dodge County made it into the AA football playoffs. Dodge Coach Willis Jones, in his 7th year with the Indi ans, has won 3 region cham pionships, and said during a telephone interview that due to football he is practicing with 8 players. Jones said that it was something that he has had to get used to; dur ing his seven-year tenure at the school, the Indians have gone to the football playoffs six years. One Dodge returning starter is a familiar name to football and basketball fans, Jeffery Thomas. Thomas averaged 22 points last sea son with 44 percent from the 3-point range. Last season he was selected by the Atlanta Constitution as one of the top five players in the region. Th? 4-AA region is one of the toughest in the state and according to Thomas, getting tougher. "Our region is just getting more and more com- idays. There’s not a lot of pressure on them in the beginning," Belcher said. “In middle school, it's not how you start it’s how you finish," said Belcher referring to the end of the season tour nament in which all seven middle schools participate. ‘OO EXPLORER 2DR SPORT, ( H&.
