Obituary Eleanor Werner Boyer Eleanor Werner Boyer, 85. died Nov. 23. 1999. Services were held at Watson Hunt Funeral Home Chapel on Nov. 26. with burial in the Perry Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Bill Strickland officiat ed. Born in Atlanta, Mrs. Boyer was a World War II Navy veteran (WAVE), a retired dental assistant and widow of M.H. Boyer. Dec. 20 Dec. 21 Houston County Earl Cheek establishes scholarship at University of Georgia Srtcm to nat Hm« Jcnauw. ATHENS Pcrryan Earl (iheek recently established a $50,000 scholarship endowment with the University of Georgia's College of HBF Agricultural and Environ mental Sci ences. A UGA spokesman said the schol arship is to be presented each year to a senior or master’s candidate working on ini tial teacher cer- Earl Cheek tification in the Agricultural Educa tion program. Cheek, a vocational agriculture teacher for 37 years, said of his gift, “If a person doesn't do something like this with his money, he doesn't deserve to have the money." Crandall Parlor of Hazlehurst is the 1999 recipient, and the first to be awarded the Cheek scholarship. The UGA spokesman said Cheek epitomizes the word "educator”. He has spent his entire life serving as an example to young people, as well as encouraging the community and state to put forth the effort and money to make dreams materialize. Cheek, bom in Hart County in 1916, was one of 10 children. He worked his way through Middle Georgia College and the University of Georgia. He received his Voca tional Agriculture degree in 1937. He received his master's from UGA in 1951 and a school administra tors certificate in 1968. The UGA spokesman said Cheek was a World War II Air Force veter an. He served 29 years on active duty and in the Reserves. He was a B-29 flight officer. As a vocational agriculture teacher from 1937 to 1974, he molded the lives of many students. He taught vocational agriculture in Baker, Early and Houston counties. A Weyerhaeuser The future is growing ™ During this 37 years of teaching, he chartered two FFA chapters and one Young Farmer chapter. While in Early County, Cheek was one of the first three teachers to initiate a young farmer program and he was later instrumental in the chartering of the Georgia Young Farmer Asso ciation. He also served as president of the State Teachers Group. Cheek was the Outstanding Vocational Agricultural teacher for Georgia in 1966 and for the South in 1968 He was named Georgia Outstanding Vocational Teacher (all services) in 1974. After retiring from teaching, he served as an administrative aide to U.S. Sen. Sam Nunn from 1974-83 and as field director for U.S. Con. Richard Ray in 1983. He was recognized as the out standing national and state FFA Alumni member in 1993 and 1995. A $96,000 FFA scholarship trust, established by the Perry FFA Chap ter is named in his honor. He was named Georgia's Retired Educator of the Year in 1997. As a leader in his community, he has chaired and presided over numerous projects and organiza tions. In Perry, he chaired the Sal vation Army Board of Directors for Houston County; assisted as a member of the Perry Historical Soci BBarii ety; and led the Board of Trustees Baptist Church Scholarship Com mittee. Cheek served as President and Lt. Governor of the Kiwanis.
