From Thanksgiving until New Year’s Day, his front yard at 1316 Smoak Ave. is a fantasy of winding paths and twinkling holiday lights.. Where do the paths lead? Straight to Bennett’s front porch where each Friday and Saturday night, he sits in his rocking chair dressed as Santa Claus, to the delight of the neighborhood children Bennett, the retired owner of Bennett’s Pest Control, says he doesn’t really know how much his thousands of lights increase his power bill . “I just let Mrs. Santa Claus handle it.” he said, referring to his wife, Retha. Bennett’s glittering dis play won first prize in Hous ton Home Journal 1999 Christmas at the Crossroads Holiday Decorating contest. Second priz6 wirlnfcfV&te Robert and Jane 2006 Marshallville Road. This is the the third house beyond Scechinah Free Will Baptist Church. The third place winner is Robin Askew, 1329 Jackson Lane, off Swift Street. There were 25 contes tants in the competition. The judging was done by a team of six Home Journal staff members who ranked each home from one to ten. The scores of each home were then totaled, and the homes with the most numerical points won. “There were so many beautiful homes that most of the scores were high,” said Jj Johnson. General Manager of the Home Jour nal. “We all had slightly dif ferent rankings and favorites, but we think it came out fairly. “What we hope is that anybody who hasn’t taken a ride around Perry, and down to Elko, to see all these beautiful homes will do so before the holiday season ends,” he added. First place was good for SSO from the newspaper. Second place received $25 while third place was worth sls.
