Panther basketball teams suffer ‘offer week

It you look al it one way. it was ;i bad week
for basketball fans in Perry. But when you
look a little closer, maybe it wasn't that bad
after all.
Perry's two varsity teams lost in all four of
their outings this week but held tlieii own
against two schools that they will definitely
see again including the number 5 and 10
teams in the state.
The Panthers started the week with a trip to
Montezuma to face the Macon County Bull
dogs. Although Perry lost 49 38, they were
down by only five at the halt
Natasha Mitchell continued her sweep as
team points leader bv scoring 1 1 including a
three pointer. Jessica Green added 10.
The boys lost to Macon by only two points.
58-56 and were led by Ronnie Collier with 15
while senior Michael Robinson added 12 that
included three treys.
Dodge County traveled to Perry Jan. 7 lot
another highly charged region matchup.
The Lady Panthers managed to hold Dodge,
ranked number 10 in the state and closed in
on them but could never overcome a 14 point
deficit from the second quarter.

spirited. The seven and eight
year-olds in the Mighty Boys
league tipped oft first in a 6
p.m. game. The Terrapins
coached by Larzarnia Bass bat
tled the Wolf Pack coached bv
Ken Davis.
The game is divided into tour
periods just like regular bas
ketball Each period of the game
is 7 minutes long and each
team member is required to be
in the game 2 full periods to
balance out playing time
The season is Imm January
through February each year lot
ages 5 to 16. boys and girls.

Pack wasn't a vety close game,
but the teams appeared to have
fun playing just the same At
half time the score was 16 2,

Mitchell again led the Lady Panthers with
scoring 18 points against Dodge.
The boys were up by two against the Indi
ans at the half but Dodge, ranked fifth in
Georgia GHSA AA. stepped it up and managed
a 55-50 victory over the Panthers.
This time Al Thornton led Perry with 15
while Collier added 12. Robinson had the solo
trev for the Panthers in the game.
Perry will stay home this week, taking on
region rival Southeast Jan. 14 and county
rival Peach County Jan. 15.

Robins and Houston County
also participated with North
Museum of Aviation to host year 2000 marathon

will host the Year 2000
Marathon/Half Marathon and
5k Run/Walk Road races at
Robins Air Force Base on Sat
urday. Jan. 22. Last year the
event, conducted by the
Robins Pacers Running Club,
involved a total of 320 runners
from all over the country.
The Marathon and Hall
Marathon races start in front
of the Museum’s Century ol
Flight hangar between 6:30
and 7:30 a m.. A 5K Fun
Run/Walk will begin at 8:15
a.m. All courses are USA
Track and Field Certified and
relatively flat with several
short inclines. The post
race/walk cool down and
awards ceremonies will be
held in the Century of Flight
Hangar. The 5K award cere
tnony is at 9:30 a.in., the Halt
Marathon at 10:45 am. and
the Marathon ceremony is at
1:00 pm.
Awards are given to the
overall top three male and
female finishers in each race,
the overall top male and
female masters in each race,
and the top active duty mili
tary male and female in the
Marathon. Each Marathon
finisher receives a medallion
as well as the top three finish
ers in thirteen different age
categories. All participants
receive a long-sleeve-T shirt
and refreshments alter each
race.

54-48 lead after three quar
ters and stretched it to 75-67
with 21 more points in the
fourth quarter.
Meanwhile, Westfield’s
Daniel Weir was having one
of his best games keeping
the Hornets in flu game with
his 24 points, twelve in each
half. Kory Kitchens and Will
Holt each had a three point
basket as the Hornets tried
to overtake the Lancers’ lead
scored just 8 points but
trailed by just 12. Kristen
Johnson got hot for the Lady
Trojans, igniting a 20 point
quarter to increase the lead to
40 18 after three periods.
Johnson scored seven more in
the fourth quarter to finish as
the game's top scorer with 22
points, seventeen coming in
the last half.
Rachel Moore scored 12 for
Westfield, but no other Lady
Hornet could manage more
Dwayne Dimsdale. only four of
his wrestlers have any experi
ence. Combined with the
injuries that have plagued the
Panthers this season. Perry
has only nine wrestlers on a
14 man team. "When you start
oil with five spots forfeited,
vou just dona have the chance
to earn points as fast as others
that have 14 wrestlers." Dims
dale explained.
Perrv will next see action in the
Houston County championship
