The executive directory of the Geor
gia School Superintendents Associa
tion said they will try to better inform
superintendents about the Open
Records Law. That's good news and
needs to be done.
As we move into the new millenni
um. government in Georgia is as open
as it ever has been. All Georgians have
the right to read police reports, county
and city commission meeting minutes
and the contracts of school officials.
Residents in some counties can get
public records online.
However, the survey that sent
reporters to sheriffs departments and

have recorded success. Perry High
has captured the Region 4-AA all
sports title for the past two years, a
sign of a strong all-round program.
(No excuses, just some facts: as
the school attendance zoning is
presently drawn, Northside, Warner
Robins and Houston County each
draw on a pair of middle schools.
Perry only draws on Perry Middle.
That Middle School has produced
several county-wide champions dur
ing this 10-year period. The fact is
the numbers didn't increase when
these students transferred to Perry
High. Meanwhile, the number of
potential football players doubled at
each of the other three county
schools because students from two
middle schools transferred in.
(No one would like to see a strong
football program at Perry High more
than I would. Despite some lack of

Hagy and
Woodard plan
Feb. 12 vows
Charlotte Hagy of Mar
shallville and Ronnie
Wiseman of Lewisburg,, W.
Va., announce the engage
ment of their daughter.
Mary Wiseman, to Ben
jamin Larry Woodard, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Barnard
Woodard of Perry.
The wedding is planned
for Feb. 12. 2000, at the
Perry Church of God.
The bride-elect is the
granddaughter of Carrie
Wiseman of Lewisburg and
the late Bessie Wiseman of
Bluefield, W. Va. She is a
graduate of Perry High
School and is currently
employed by McDonald's
and Pizza Hut.
The groom-elect is a

county complexes all over the state
indicates that much work has to be
done before government is “transpar
ent” as Governor Roy Barnes wants it to
be. Many cities and agencies ignore or
defy state open records laws. Some of
the key discoveries of the survey were:
By and large, cities and counties are
obeying the law and making public
documents available. Some don’t
understand the law, therefore they are
breaking it by operating in secret.
Law enforcement agencies skirt open
records laws more frequently, although
some do an excellent job of releasing
the information.
Some school districts are confused
about open records laws.
As we move further into the millen-
success on the field, I believe the
coaches are building men, far more
important in the overall scheme of
things. There are many good pro
grams at Perry High of which we
need to be proud the award-win
ning FFA teams, the super Pride of
the Crossroads Band, the overall
region title for two years running.
These are all indications of a good
extracurricular program at Perry
High. - Jj)

nium and public officials become more
familiar with the 1999 Open Records
Law, we trust that compliance will
increase.
We like what Thurbert Baker, the
states first black attorney general said,
when he pointed out that the issue is
more about fairness and accessibility
than race. “If you have accessibility to
your government, you can consider your
government to be fair and one that oper
ates to the benefits of all its citizens."
There is no question in my mind that
all governmental offices and agencies
should function to serve those who
elect them and pay their salaries. And
allowing the public their right to know
is without doubt part of their responsi
bility.

Bv recycling your Christmas tree,
you saved valuable landfill space. Some
of your trees were dropped into lakes
for fish habitats. Others were chipped
into mulch to be used in city parks, on
school grounds or were given back to
nourish some ol your own back yards.
Mulch is always available tree at the
City Barn.
Thanks for making Georgia a better
