Woman killed in
weekend traffic
accident
A Dublin woman was killed
as the result of a traffic acci
dent that occurred just after
midnight May 26.
According to Houston County
Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Mike
Stokes, 28-year-old Shambira
Chappell was traveling west on
Barrett Road about 1 a.m.
when she apparently lost con
trol of her Saturn SL2 while
attempting to negotiate a
curve.
The vehicle overturned sev
eral times, said Stokes, land
ing in the front yard of a
nearby residence. Chappell
was ejected from the vehicle
and suffered multiple head
trauma, he said. She was pro
nounced dead at the scene of
the accident.
Stokes said Chappell had re
portedly attended a party in
the area. Speed and alcohol are
suspected as contributing fac
tors to the accident, he added.

Crop insurance bill
passes House and
Senate
TIFTON, Ga.—Georgia
farmers can now breathe a sigh
of relief after the passage of
legislation providing $7.1 bil
lion in emergency payments to
farmers. Georgia peanut farm
ers have suffered low prices
and increasing costs of produc
tion over the past several years
and praise the efforts made by
Georgia’s congressional lead
ers in assisting with the pas
sage of the House-Senate crop
insurance report.
The conference report, also
known as the “Agricultural
Risk Protection Act” (H.R.
2559), that passed the House
and Senate on Wednesday, pro
vides peanut farmers with $47
million in direct payments in
FY2OOI. The bill will now go to
the President to be signed into
law.

that Georgia’s congressional
leaders have recognizedthe se
rious problem peanut growers
have faced with low prices and
increasingproduction costs
during the past several years,”
says Joe Boddiford,
peanutfarmer from Sylvania,
Ga. and chairman of the Geor
gia Peanut Commission.
“Thes47 million could not have
come at a better time and this
money will allow many farm
ers to stay in business.”

The request from Dutch Management, Inc. to rezone a 30
acre site from R-Ag to R-l in order to build a 19-lot subdivi
sion, has brought forth heated opposition from landowners
in that rural area.
Walker has stated publicly that he opposes the rezoning.
At the meeting, the Commissioners will set the qualifying
dates and fee for a special election to fill the post vacated by
Commissioner Thomson. Walker said that he expects the spe
cial election to be held concurrently with the November Gen
eral Election.
He also noted that the winner of the upcoming election for
the Commission Chairmanship will take office at die earli
est possible date after the election is held
