Walking to School
Pedestrian injuries are the sec
ond leading cause of accidental
death among children ages 5 to 14.
It is recommended that children
under the age of 10 never cross the
street alone. Houston County
SAFE KIDS offers these additional
safety guidelines:
Choose the safest route and walk
it with children. Look for the most
direct route with the fewest street
crossings. Walk the route which
children until they demonstrate
traffic safety awareness. They
should take the same route every
day and avoid shortcuts.
* Teach children to recognize
and obey all traffic signals and
markings.
* Make sure children look in all
directions before crossing the
street - look left, right and left
again.

* Teach children not to enter the
street from between parked cars or
from behind bushes or shrubs.
Darting into the street accounts for
the majority of child pedestrian fa
talities.
* Teach children to cross the
street, walking and not running, at
a corner or crosswalk. Tell chil
dren to listen to adult crossing
guards or safety patrols.
* Warn children to be extra alert
in bad weather. Visibility may be
poor, and motorists may not be able
to see them or stop quickly.
* Demonstrate proper safety by
being a good role model. Parents,
caregivers and older peers should
set good examples for younger chil
dren.
Following these important safety
guidelines and reviewing them ev
ery year with your children can
help keep the back-to-school sea
son a safe one.

Those of you who attended the

that time, the Warner Robins,

all played in the same region,
so it was a region game. When

couple of game programs, since
we didn’t have the roster of the
Columbus team. This was our
normal procedure. We did have
region statistics, and Columbus
had a few players on our list. But
John couldn’t find a program
anywhere! In fact, when the
game began, he was still out
there looking, and I, in a mild
state of panic, had started the
play by play without John, or the
Columbus roster. What I did,
though, was take the few Colum
bus players I knew and put them
on my lineup card.
Then, as I watched the Colum
bus players come onto the field,
I jotted down their numbers. I
simply game them a name, out
of the blue. When John did re
turn after finally locating a pro
gram, we simply substituted the
correct names beside the num

Pride in Perry - The beautification award for August goes
to Martin and Jackie Beeland, shown here at their home
at 609 Hillcrest Avenue in Perry.
I don’t remember the year,
but I definitely remember the
night Bob Morrow and I were
doing the play by play of the
Perry-Manchester game at the
Panther Pit. It was midway
through the second quarter when
the stadium lights went out!
Blown transformer! The equip
ment we used, though, had a bat

ued to broadcast. We didn’t know
if we were on the air, though, un
til someone in the stands below
us turned to let us know that we
were still on the air. We couldn’t
monitor the station, so we were
unable to do a commercial break.
So, for eighteen minutes, we
stayed on the air giving the ac
counts of what had happened a
few times, and generally just re
capping the football scene in the
middle Georgia area. Those of
you who remember Bob Morrow
recall that he was never at a loss
for words, so covering eighteen

minutes was no chore for us.
And I remember Bob’s first
words when the lights came
back on. “Boy, I hate to see
that, I wasn’t finished yet!”
I suppose those events rank
among the most memorable
for me. So would the time I
did four straight GISA state
tournament games from the
old Jonesco Academy gym,
back to back, for four different
schools and four different ra
dio stations. I also did four
straight games another time,
also in the GISA playoffs, but
this time I did two for a Ma
con station, then two for
WPGA, so it wasn’t quite as
frantic as doing them for four
different stations.
High school sports brings on
some exciting and sometimes
amusing circumstances. I
don’t know about you, but I’m
ready for another season to
begin.
