Margaret Hill - teacher and shining light
By Lanorris Fleming
Staff Writer
A little light shining the dark
ness, that is what you see when
you look at Margaret Hill.
At 74 years of age she sees this
as the theme of her life and is still
allowing her light to shine in the
lives of children and adults alike
by continuing to educate those
who seek education.
Born in Savannah, Hill made
the trek to Perry in 1948 to take
a position as a first grade music
teacher at the then Houston
County Training School located
on the present WF Ragin Drive.
Fresh out of college and pur
suing a career as a secretary, Hill
was asked by then Superinten
dent of Schools Seabie Hickson
to come to Perry and teach mu
sic to his first graders.

Hill said. I didn’t want to leave
the city but agreed to come on for
one year.”
After that one year Hill had
impressed the community and
the leaders of the school enough
for them to ask her to come back
to stay.
“That was fifty years ago, “ she
said, and here I am.”
Clad with a BS degree in Edu
cation and a major in Social Stud
ies from Georgia State College in
Savannah, Hill came back to
Perry for good. She stayed in the
Houston County system for 10
years before moving to Macon
County where she was offered
another music teaching position
just after giving birth to her first
child.

• After retiring in 1986 Hill took
on the job of substituting in the
Houston County School system
for a year and a half. After this
time she was approached by
Joyce Compton and asked if she
would like to work with the adult
literacy program.
“I saw this as an opportunity
to give back some of what I had
within me,” said Hill.
Over the past eight years the
adult literacy program has
changed hands a number of times
but never to the dismay of Hill.
She is still working with those
who want to make a difference
in their lives by educating them
selves. She teaches them at all
levels to receive their GED.

job is to see the results,” she said,
“When I see individuals after
they have reached their goals and
they come to me and ask why
were you so mean? Why did you
push so hard and then to hear
them thank me for pushing and
helping them to be successful,
that is really satisfying.”
We often hear that we are
never to old to learn and Hill
brings this credo home with the
story of her oldest student.
“My oldest student is an 82
year old women, “ she said. “She
had a goal and that was to be
able to participate in Bible
study.”
According to Hill after joining
the adult literacy program this
woman is now an active partici
pant in her church’s Bible Study
and her fear of speaking is gone.
