The Cellular Phone Scare: Fact or Fiction?
Since the age of cellular I have
become one of its many active
users. My cell phone is my link
with the world when I am out on
assignments or just out of reach
from family and friends. Just
having the phone in the car with
me makes me think of someone
that I need to call. My friends
from college stay in constant
touch with me by using free
weekend and evening minutes as
do I with them.
Not only has the cellular age
enabled people to chit chat on the
road or even at home for what

it has enabled us to conduct busi

I grew up singing in church
choirs. From the earliest times of
my life I was a part of the angel
choir, the pre-teen choir, the
youth choir and finally the adult
choir. And in those times I
learned the songs of the church
by heart. The music helped shape
my faith and the sounds touched
my soul. - All through the years I
have had flashbacks of memories
when I would hear a certain song.
My daddy loved The Old Rug
ged Cross, so that song reminded
me of him. My mother loved The
Lost Chord so I related that one
to her. I remembered camp times
by hearing Michael Rowed the
Boat Ashore or Kum Ba Ya.
I don’t sing in the choir regu
larly now. I prefer to sit in the
congregation and listen to the
music. But the words and the
music of the songs I hear still give
me goosebumps from time to
time. And the music adds to the
sermon and the organ adds to the
feeling. It all comes together to
make religious music a basic part
of my life.
A few weeks ago I did go back
to choir practice. The Perry
United Methodist Church choir
is presenting a concert this week
end and I wanted to be part of it.
It is a concert of favorite church
songs or as it is titled “Favorite
Anthems Concert.”
The entire program is the re

Though the threats that most
people equate with the increased
use of cellular phones involves
driving and auto accidents in past
years some scientists and others
have caused quite a stir involv

new threat causes cellular users
to look at possible health risks
related to extended use of mo
bile phones, perhaps even caus
ing cancer.
I have read repeatedly in the
past months that scientists are

people’s favorite church an
thems. Isn’t that a neat idea! -
So there I was each and every
Wednesday night singing away.
The rehearsals have been two
hours long and this group is a
dedicated one which goes at it
hard from start to finish. I don’t
have the voice I used to have and
so I squeaked and squawked my
way though song after song. It
might have bothered those
around me but I am a throw your
head back and let it all hang out
kind of singer.
I sing for the pure thrill of sing
ing. I am not a purist in any sense
of the word. - But having said
this, let me confess that I learned
a lot about music during my time
in the choir. I learned about
breathing and especially about
sounding out the words. I learned
how to stop screaming my sounds
out and to let them flow as “one

warning cellular users that the
widespread use of hand-held mo
bile phones means that many
people routinely place radio fre
quency (RF) transmitters against
their heads. Research is being
conducted on the occurrence of
brain and neck cancers in cellu

I thought that maybe those of
you who use cell phones with fre
quency might be interested in
this study that I found in an
email newsletter.:
In a document posted on the
Web in February 2000, the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration
noted that “[TJhere is currently

I practiced. - The concert is this
Sunday at 3:00 and 7:00 at the
Board of Education Building.
If you want to attend you need
to call the office at the Perry
United Methodist Church and
get a ticket - a free ticket! The
concerts are open to one and all.
You don’t have to be a member
of Perry United Methodist
Church to attend. - But when you
go, don’t look for me. I won’t be
singing. After all my practicing I
found that I have a work conflict
on Sunday that won’t allow me
to be there.
All that hard work and I won’t
even get to sing the tenor part on
Behold the Lamb or tap my foot
and sing along on Go Tell It On
The Mountain.- Still if you listen
carefully you might hear a sound
in the distance. It will be me with
my head thrown back and letting
it all hang out - squeaks and
squawks and pure pleasure.

Letters to the Editor
Dear Editor:
During a recent meeting of our
local Kiwanis Club, the need for
quality organizations for the
younger generation was dis
cussed. These organizations
should teach spiritual morals and
family values, respect, team
building skills and stress concern
for the least fortunate. One lis

question. “What about the
Scouts? Aren’t the girls we see
selling cookies and the bows in
the brown and blue uniforms
supposed to stnd for just these
qualities?”
“Of course,” said another, “but
are there any in Middle Geor

Yes, Virginia, there are still
Scouts in Middle Goergia! And
yes, the priorities of God, nation,
family and self are still taught in
that order. But this year parents
in our public school who are wait

This means that there is no

Should they spend millions of
dollars to find definite proof? Or
should they just allow us to be
quite complacent? Further on in
