Roberts apparently roused sus
picion early by giving a false name
to police investigators, and was
shown to have lied at several
points in questioning.
He originally denied that he had
been in the parking lot. Portions
of a videotape of an interrogation
of Roberts by Det. McSwain were
shown to the jury, however, show
ing Roberts changing his story
after learning that investigators
had identified a palm print on the

need applications,” she says.
“We have the goals, but we
don’t have the applicants.” She
continues, “We are trying to

that information.”
The process for finding the
right people to build houses for
begins with the family submit
ting an application about its
total income, living conditions,
etc. A committee then inspects
the family’s housing and cur
rent living situation and makes
an informed decision on
whether they are a good candi
date for a Habitat house.
Homeowner families are cho
sen according to their need and
their ability to purchase the
house and repay a no-profit, no
interest mortgage.
Once the decision is made,
homeowner families must be
willing to work in partnership
with Habitat, participating in
the building of the house, work
ing with Habitat staff approxi
mately 500 hours under trained
supervision.
Of course, Habitat staffers
and the homeowner families
aren’t the only ones necessary
to help build the houses.
Approximately 20 to 30 volun
teers are needed to work each
build. Those interested in vol
unteering can call 478-328-
3388 and talk to Yessica
Higuera or John Sillers or stop
by their office at 723 Bernard
Drive in Warner Robins. For
those who are unable to partic
ipate in a build, monetary con
tributions and donations, such
as food and drink for volunteers
at various builds, are accepted.
Habitat for Humanity
International organizes builds
around the world. Since it was
founded in 1976, Habitat has
built more than 125,000 houses
in more than 80 countries,
including 45,000 houses across
the U.S. When asked if Houston
County HFH participates in
any international builds,
Higuera says, “we just work in
Houston County, because there
are a lot of people who need
help here. When you see a fam

The case was prosecuted by
District Attorney Kelly Burke and
Assistant DA Jason Ashford.
Commenting on the outcome,
District Attorney Kelly Burke
said, “Michael Roberts never did

might do so. His total lack of
