The Houston Home Journal is continuing its new section, “The Front Page.” These selections give readers a chance to see what wonderful
things our children do in the classroom. Our teachers do a fantastic job focusing on literacy, and our children are developing strong skills as
writers and readers. Each week, you will be able to sample some exciting things coming out of Perry’s elementary schools. Enjoy!
Winter is a Time
Winter is a time for joy and celebrations. You can always get together with
your family. Everyone likes bundling up in a warm quilt and lying by a cozy
fire. You can sing carols and make snowmen. If it snows you can go sled
ding. How? Well you get to the top of a hill and give yourself a little push
and down you go! Then you go inside and get some hot cocoa and warm
up by a cozy fire. And on Christmas Eve, wait by the fireplace of old Saint
Nick to come down the chimney and set the presents by the tree. If you see
him and he sees you, he’ll give you a wink of an eye and say, “Shhhh,” and
“Ho Ho Ho!” Merry Christmas! And to all a good night and good night to
all!

Winter is a time for your family and giving thanks to God. Sometimes my
family and I sit by a warm fire and drink hot chocolate and coffee. We enjoy
talking about Christmas. You know some people can not celebrate
Christmas. We should be happy that we can! We celebrate because it is
God’s birthday. You should be happy you have a family.

The Empty House
It was Christmas Eve. Santa was coming so Jay, my younger brother and I
went to bed. The next morning we woke up to find toys, a computer, and
clothes under the tree.
Next door to us was an abandoned house. Jay wanted to know if Santa left
presents in empty houses.
“Good question,” I said. “Let’s go see.” We walked next door. The house
was in really bad shape. Its door was hanging open, windows were broken,
and the furniture was covered in dust and cobwebs. We looked around
inside and found an old box on the floor. Inside the box we found an old
book.
I opened the book and discovered that it was an old diary. There was a
name, Annie Mae, and the phone number 987-2620 printed in the back. My
brother came over and spotted another name. The name was James
McCarty.
“Why does it have names in it?” asked Jay.
“It’s a diary. It’s supposed to have names,” I said as I walked up the stairs.
More books were on the floor. Some of them were very old and some
looked brand new. There was a bookcase on my right. I picked up the
books and put them on the bookcase.
‘There are a lot of books,” said Jay.
“The people who live here must have liked to read.”
“Why did they like to read?”
“Maybe they didn’t go to school.”
“Why not?” asked Jay.
“I don’t know, Jay, you’re asking too many questions.” I said.
“I do not ask too many questions,” said jay as he stomped away.
With jay gone, I could continue finding clues about the house. I opened a
door on my left and heard a strange noise. I was very scared because it was
dark and spooky in the house alone. “Is someone here?” I asked. A voice
answered, “Yes.” Someone was coming toward me! I backed slowly away.
“I’m cold,” said the voice coming closer. It was a small child.
“What’s your name?”
He hesitated before saying, “John.”
“Is your Mom here?”
“She died.”
“Oh! Who lives here with you?”
“I live by myself.”
“Do you want to live with me?”
“Yes.”
“Come with me.” We left together. I asked Mom if he could stay with us
and she said yes.

The Christmas Poem
When you see all the lanes.
All you see are candy canes.
When it is really cold.
All the leaves get really old.
When we all get out of school.
The snow feels like comfy wool.
When you see all the deer.
There is nothing you can hear.
The icicles are real, real hard.
They’re all hard as a metal bar.

Christmas Eve
On Christmas Eve everyone buys toys, clothes, and rings for presents. They
all go to sleep at midnight when Santa comes down the chimney. He gets a
little bit dirty when he comes down. Sometimes he sees milk and cookies
on the table, so he eats the meal. He gets close to the fire and gets warm.
He puts some presents in the stockings. He sees the beautiful tree and some
toys for the kids. The kids don’t know that Santa Claus was there. People
all over the country are celebrating Christmas they celebrate it on the twen
ty-fifth of December.

Mom put a package under the tree. I looked for a long time, and I wanted
to open it, but my mom said not until this evening. I got mad and went to
my room and fell asleep. The six hours later I heard my mom say, “Steven!”
I said, “Yes?” She said, “Come here. I have surprise for you.” “What is
it?” I asked. I ran to the living room. She said, “Open it.” It was a puppy!

Dear Family,
My Christmas wish for you is to have a good life, a happy Christmas, and a
lot of presents. Christmas is a holiday for Santa to eat cookies, go down
your chimney, and drop off presents for children and parents. Teachers get
to have a day off. Great-grandparents get to rest their bones and muscles.
Family is all you need to be. You don’t need to compromise.
Happy Merry Christmas!!!

A Christmas Wish
On Christmas Eve I told my mom that I wish I could have a game called
Cadoo. She said, “Maybe Santa will bring it to you.”
“But how will he know?” I asked.
“He will know, trust me,” she replied. Just when she finished talking my
dad opened the door and ran to another room to wrap a present. I tried to
follow him, but my mom stopped me from going in to see what he was
wrapping. She had seen him holding a puppy in his arms. Mom told me to
stay where I was, and she ran into the room where my dad was and shut the
door. I ran to my room, and there as Cadoo, the game I wanted. But, what
was dad holding? I wondered.
The next morning was Christmas. I ran to the tree. I saw a puppy with a
bow around his neck, and guess what he was doing. He was tearing into the
presents. I ran and called mom and dad to come quick. “Well, it looks like
we have a present opener. I think I will call him Nosey,” I said.
That night at dinner Nosey got into the turkey, so we had to go out to a
restaurant for dinner. We took Nosey with us which was a gigantic mistake.
When the singers were on stage singing, Nosey would not stop barking.
That night Nosey got in bed with me. My mom and dad came in and I said,
“This was the best Christmas ever!”

Dear Santa,
I would like to be the elf in charge of the weather because I love to look up
the weather with my Mom on the computer. I’m very good on the comput
er. I like to go to different weather sites on the computer. I’m good at help
ing. I could let you know which parts of the world would be warm or cold
on Christmas Eve. I also know about cold fronts, blizzards and fog. If it’s
really foggy Rudolph might need to shine his nose bright. I am very will
ing to help you, and I hope you pick me.

I hope you will pick me as a helper elf.

thing to do. I can mop the floor and sweep. I can wipe tables and polish
things also. I can even wash dishes. When Christmas comes, I get to put up
the stockings.
