The salesman said I needed collateral insurance, and I could purchase it from him. What does this insurance cover? Answer: The lender or finance company wants to pro tect their interest in the trans action and be certain that your loan is paid, even if the vehicle is destroyed before your loan is satisfied. By requiring you to pay for collateral insurance, the lender knows the loan is secure. Collateral insurance is fre quently called “single-interest” insurance. Although it would pay the balance of your loan in the event your car is destroyed, it would not pay you to repair any damage, or reimburse you for your equity in the vehicle. It also does not provide the liabili ty protection coverage required by Georgia law before driving your vehicle on a public road. Collateral insurance is nor mally much more expensive than comprehensive and collision coverage that can be purchased from a licensed insurance agent (unless the car dealership has a licensed agent on staff, they cannot legally sell you an insur ance policy). Your loan agree ment may allow you to substi tute physical damage coverage for collateral coverage if you include them as the lienholder or loss payee in your insurance policy. Although the physical dam age portion of a standard auto mobile polity may provide more extensive coverage, it would not necessarily pay off your loan your vehicle could be worth less than the loan balance. You may be able to buy “gap” insurance that would pay the difference. Under Georgia law, you are only required to purchase liabil ity insurance for your vehicle to cover injuries or damage you might cause to others. You are not legally required to buy any other coverage. A lender, generally, will want you to pur chase physical damage or collat eral insurance if they are going to lend you money to purchase the vehicle, Please send your insurance or fire safety questions to: Insurance and Fire Commissioner John Oxendine 716 West Tower 2 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive Atlanta, Georgia 30334 Or call 404-656-2070 (toll free at 1-800-656-2298) for assis- 45% OFF Selected Fall & Winter Fashions 50% OFF Holiday Fashions Sizes: Boys 0-7 Girls 0-16 Early Closing Dec. 24th @ 3:00, Closed Christmas Day - Closed Dec. 31st & Jan.
