Keep your
New Year’s
Health
Resolutions
Losing weight, stopping smoking,
or starting an exercise program usually top New
Year’s resolution lists every year. But if your first
impulse is to take action, you might want to stop
and think about it instead.
“America is an action-oriented country,” says
Dr. James Prochaska, psychologist and author of
Changing for Good. “So, at New Year's, we think
there are only two choices—take action or do
nothing. Most people think it must be better to
take action than do nothing. But if you’re not
prepared for change, you’re doomed to failure.”
Indeed, half of all American adults make
New Year’s resolutions every January, but almost
half of those throw in the towel by February,
Prochaska says. Instead of resolving to take
action, first resolve to enter a period of self
evaluation. “Change involves progress through a
series of stages,” Prochaska says. “You must first
get to a stage of readiness for taking action.”
Stages of change are recognizing the need
to change, contemplating a change, preparing
to change, taking action to change, and main
taining the new behavior, he says.
Getting to the action stage may mean exam
ining why you’ve been resisting changing
unhealthy habits in the first place, as well as con
templating the benefits of new habits. “Exercise
is the bargain basement of behavior change,"
Prochaska says. “Nothing you can do will have
as many benefits as exercise, and we know that
exercise is the best predictor of long-term success
in weight loss. Yet when people resolve to lose
weight, most go on a diet rather than exercise.”

FOR PEOPLE WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES
rosiglitazone maleate
“As long as there are stories to share, I’ll take care of my diabetes.”
“It’s our special time reading together on the porch. Bobby never gets tired of hearing his favorites. I never get tired
of seeing him smile. I’m not going to let type 2 diabetes keep me from sharing many more stories with my grandson.
“I’ve switched to a healthier diet. Even my wife’s on it. For exercise, I walk a mile a day but I still needed some help.
So my doctor added Avandia for my type 2 diabetes. It makes my body more responsive to its own natural insulin, so
I can control my blood sugar more effectively.
“My blood sugar levels have improved with Avandia. And white not everyone has the same results, I’ve kept my blood
sugar down for over a year. Now that’s a great story.”
Avandia, along with diet and exercise, helps improve blood sugar control, ft may be prescribed alone, with Glucophage*
(metformin HCI tablets) or with sulfonytureas. When taking Avandia with a sulfonylurea, you may be at risk for low blood
sugar. Ask your doctor whether you need to lower your sulfonylurea dosage.
Some people may experience tiredness, weight gain or swelling with Avandia
Avandia in combination with insulin may increase the risk of serious heart problems. Because of this, talk to your
doctor before using Avandia and insulin together. Avandia may cause fluid retention, or swelling, which could lead to or
worsen heart failure, so tell your doctor if you have a history of these conditions. If you experience an unusually rapid
increase in weight, swelling or shortness of breath while taking Avandia talk to your doctor immediately. Avandia is not
for everyone. If you have severe heart failure or active liver disease, Avandia is not recommended.
Also, blood tests to check for serious liver problems should be conducted before and during Avandia therapy. TeU your
doctor if you have liver disease, or if you experience unexplained tiredness, stomach problems, dark urine or yellowing
of the skin while taking Avandia
If you are nursing, pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant, or if you are a premenopausal woman who is not
ovulating, talk to your doctor before taking Avandia
