Houston wins tournament

THOMASTON - The Upson-
Lee Holiday Tournament was
an odd one for the teams of
Houston County.
Both sets of Bears won the
championship games but did
not dominate the Upson-Lee
Knights and Lady Knights like
they have before. The Bears
found themselves in a four
quarter battle that resulted in a
score of 41-38 while the Lady
Bears jumped out to a large and
early lead only to let it slip, forc
ing the Lady Bears to make a
fourth quarter comeback.
“We made a couple of careless
mistakes and gave them a cou
ple of easy baskets,” said

FORSYTH - Northside trav
eled Saturday to finish the
Mary Persons’ Christmas
Tournament and did well with
the Lady Eagles finishing sec
ond to Peach County while the
Eagles finished third, defeating
Southeast of Macon.
The girls’ championship saw
the Lady Eagles lose by just five
points in a 46-41 game. The
Eagles fared slightly better,
points wise, with a score of BB
SS. The Lady Eagles are 5-6
overall while their male coun
terparts are just one win behind
with a record of 4-6 overall.

2002 Bear Brawl

Last week, the 2002 Bear
Brawl concluded its run with
the boys and girls champi
onship and consolation game.
Fans in attendance of the
Ninth annual event certainly
didn’t have to look at their ros
ters much, however, as local
teams dominated the final day
of play on Monday, Dec. 23.
Houston County teams filled
four of the eight spots in the last
four games of the tournament

Four Eagles bring home
hardware from Jones

Basketball wasn’t the only
game going on over the
Christmas holiday as Northside
took to the mat to compete in
the 2002 Grayhound Duels
wrestling meet in Gray over the
weekend.
The Eagles placed in sixth
place in team standings as
Shaw finished first followed by
Morgan County, Heritage and
Hephzibah.
Rounding out the team
results found Butler and Cross
Creek bring up the rear in sev
enth and eighth place.
Northside fared much better
in the individual category as
four Eagles reached the finals

In the boys championship
game, Warner Robins pulled off
a sensational come from behind
win over host Houston County.
In the girls championship, the
Lady Bears escaped with a nar
row 40-39 nail biter over
Timmonsville, S.C.
The girls consolation game
saw the Demonettes claim
theirs with a win over Upson-
Lee.

took the gold in the 119 pound
class and Tavaris Boyd claimed
the top prize in the 170 weight
class.
Travis Myles finished in sec
ond in the 130 pound class and
Tamero Price placed second in
the 189 pound class.
“We had a lot of guys compet
ing up in weight class,”
Northside head coach Dan Kelly
said. “They had a little too
much bird over Christmas. But
we were able to get back on the
mats and compete. It was good
to get back out there and I was
pleased.”
