Christmas may be over, but don't throw away your Christmas tree By Luci Jou Ilian Staff Writer If you are like most people, now that the holidays are almost over and the lights and ornaments have been taken off the Christmas tree, you place your tree curbside for the garbage truck to pick up or quickly find the nearest dump to throw it in. There is another option, though. Christmas tree recycling offers a host of benefits. You can recycle your tree this Saturday at “The Great Christmas Tree Roundup,” hosted by Keep Warner Robins Beautiful. On January 4th, the collection, which includes drive-up service and drop-off, will run from 8 am to 1 pm on Maple Street, off Watson Boulevard. The Warner Robins tree roundup began in 1990 and has been sponsored since 1991 by Flint Energies and Asplundh Tree Expert Co. The collected trees, which are measured not in number but in poundage, totaled over 15,000 pounds last year. After the trees are collected, they are taken to Diversified Carriers and made into mulch. This mulch is then placed in parks throughout Warner Events Jan. 3-5 • U.S. Team Roping Championships. Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter. 386-546-3210. KWRB executive direc tor Willice Walters also finds that Warner Robins residents often cart off the recycled trees so that they may use them as fish habitats. Besides getting the satisfac tion of knowing that they are doing something good for the environment, those who recycle their tree will receive a free tree seedling, donated by Flint Energies and distributed by KWRB’s youth advisory board. Children will get the chance to see Woodsy Owl and Smokey the Bear. Participants will also enjoy refreshments provided by the Warner Robins Pilot Club and barbeque provided by«^» Sonny’s.
