The U.S. Attorney’s office
that covers the Middle Georgia
district is part of a new project
that focuses on the reduction of
gun-related crimes.
Project Safe Neighborhoods
is an initiative handed down by
the Bush administration that
switches the previous focus of
creating gun legislation relating
to the sale of firearms to, among
other things, working through
advertising to get the message
across that a crime committed
with a gun is subject to a stiffer
penalty in the court system,
U.S. Attorney for the Middle
Georgia district Max Wood told
Perry Rotary members Monday.
The issue of handguns has
always been a “political foot
ball,” said Wood, who explained
that the new gun violence pro
gram has shifted focus on how
to fight gun-related crimes.
Wood’s office works to bring
together members of the law
enforcement community in his
district, creating a task force, to
look for ways of bringing the
number of gun-related crimes
down.
Some areas that have imple
mented this new program have
already seen results, he said.
One portion of the program
includes having staff from a
local college sift through
records at local law enforce
ment agencies and compile
