Perdue to hold summit in Perry
By Emily Johnstone
HHJ Associate Editor
PERRY - Gov. Sonny Perdue
will be at the Georgia National
Fairgrounds and Agricenter
Wednesday to hold a summit
dealing with various education
al issues.
According to Derrick Dickey,
spokesperson for the governor’s
office, 900 educators through
out the state have been invited
to attend the summit that will
include comments by Perdue;

effect for the 2002 Senate,
House and gubernatorial elec
tion.
Last month, the U.S.
Supreme Court effectively
ruled that the district court rul
ing was wrong, leading to the
likelihood that the “slice and
dice” map, which was signed
into law by former Gov. Roy
Barnes, may come back to
haunt everyone, from candi
dates to voters.
Perdue, who has been a con
sistent opponent of partisan
gerrymandering, had fire in his
eyes when he discussed the sub
ject on Tuesday.
“The courts may have said
that it’s legal,” he said, “But I
don’t think it’s right and the
people of Georgia don’t think
it’s right. We ought to do redis
tricting irrespective of race or
political parties.”
Speaking of the Democratic
leaders who were then in
charge of the state Senate, he
said, “They tore our state
apart. They thought the people
wouldn’t pay attention, but the
people have paid attention.”
Perdue has pushed for a set of
principles for redistricting, and
got those principles passed in
the last session by the state
Senate, now under Republican
control.
“We ought to do redistricting
irrespective of race or political
parties,” Perdue said, describ-

Eugene Hickock, undersecre
tary of the U.S. Department of
Education; and Kathy Cox,
state school superintendent.
There will be three work
shops held during the summit,
Dickey said.
One workshop will host the
topic of improving classroom
discipline.
The other two will include
discussion about reducing the
load of paperwork educators
find themselves dealing with

ing those principles. “We ought
to obey the law. We ought to
keep county lines unbroken
and keep communities of inter
est together. We ought to keep
the deviation (in plus or minus
margin allowed in equalizing
districts) as low as possible.
Those are all gimmicks that
they (the Democrats) used for
the admitted purpose of parti
san control.”
Perdue, who took Georgia’s
Democratic Attorney General
Thurbert Baker to court in an
effort to get the high court
appeal dropped, is still waiting
on a Georgia Supreme Court
ruling on whether he or Baker
had the last say on whether or
not to appeal.
That decision may be moot at
this point, but the governor’s
basic mission in regard to redis
tricting remains unchanged,
and he plans to push once more
in the 2003 General Assembly
to establish non-partisan prin
ciples for drawing district lines.

Dickey said.
