T/ie green on hole 4 is also being replaced with “Tift Eagle” grass developed in Tifton. There are
many benefits to the new grass including its ability to stay green later into the fall, and become
green earlier the following spring.

area golfers with a more up-to

“We’re going to have a modern
course and be ahead of the
curve,” said golf professional
John Anderson.
Pine Oaks is moving, like
Perry Country Club also did sev
eral years ago, to the Tift Eagle
grass on the greens.
“You’re able to cut it lower
and not kill,” Anderson said of
the courses new grass. “The
leafs are also smaller, so the
smaller the leafs the better the
putting surface you can get. It’s
also a little bit more cold toler
ant so it’ll last a little bit longer
and green up a little bit quicker.
“They did all the research
down in Tifton, and they took
this good gene and that good
gene and made a good grass,”
Anderson said. “A lot of the
resorts, Myrtle Beach and places
like that are going to Tift Eagle.
“Our previous greens were
able 40 years old so our drainage
was really bad,” Anderson said.
“We had too much clay for the
size of greens that we had. Now,
where we used to have some
drainage problems we won’t
because we can actually say we
want water here and no water
here.”
Anderson believes the new
changes will improve playability

The green on hole 5 is being expanded allowing for a better
chance to hit the green on the second or third approach shot.
There are temporary hole placements in the fairway until the
course work is complete in October.

of the course, and allow golfers
to recover from less than stellar
shots.
“Our old greens were so small
and so elevated that if you
missed the green you really had
a tough shot,” Anderson said.
“Now the lies are going to be a
little more level versus up or
down hill, so, your chipping is
going to be a lot easier.
“I can make the course as easy
or as hard as I want to,”
Anderson explained. “They’ve
put more bunker in so I can put
a hole behind a bunker and
make it more difficult, yet they
(golfers) still have that other
side of the green to play that’s
actually a bigger target.
“Some of the greens (will be)
two, two and a half times big
ger.” So, you’ll have a bigger
landing area. The greens are
going to be more fair.

and your bad shots will not be
penalized nearly as bad as they
used to be,” Anderson said.
“But, putting is going to be a
real good challenge.”
While the benefits are appar
ent, the process is intensive.
“First we hired a design team
out of Kansas,” Anderson said,
describing what is entailed in
undertaking a massive course
overhaul such as changing the
greens.
“They came in and profession
ally designed it, making sure of
the drainage and everything.
“If it’s (the hole) is a far-5
then you need this size green
and stuff like that. Then we
went out for bids and hired a
golf construction company and
went in their, ripped everything
apart, got on the bulldozer and
reshaped everything, put in
drainage, put in a gravel area, so
we’re getting what we call a new
green complex.”
A new green complex involves
not just the green itself, but the
surrounding bunkers, hazards
and irrigation.
In effect, when construction
on the greens is scheduled to
complete in October, Houston
County will have a new golf
course to play.
“It will be a new golf course,”
Anderson said. “The way the
holes play will basically be the
same, but the way the greens
look will be totally brand new.”
