Wild happenings at the Perry library
By Judy Hall
HHJ Staff Writer
PERRY - Lately things have
been really wild at the Perry
Library and, no, I’m not refer
ring to the children who visit
there.
On a recent Wednesday, a
large rat, a box turtle, a macaw
and a ball python made a visit.
Other than the macaw, they
observed the basic library rules
and were “quiet as a mouse.”
Accompanying them was Erin
St. Clair and her two helpers
Christian Hutchinson and
Marcus Miller. St. Clair works
with the animals at the Animal
Park at Chehaw Parks, north of
Albany. Hutchinson and Miller
are summer workers.
St. Clair established two rules
for the more than 300 children
and parents who were visiting
the library - keep their lips
sealed and sit still for the entire
show. She told them that loud
noises and sudden movements
could disturb the animals. The
reward she offered the children
was a chance to touch the ani
mals after the show.

After a few words about mam
mals, St. Clair introduced Milo
the rat. Milo, she explained, is a
very clean animal, not the type
of rat most people are familiar
with. In fact, she said, the rat,
after being handled by a human
would immediately clean him
self.
Next St. Clair introduced
Zeus, a blue and gold macaw, to
the group. She also introduced
Zeus to a brightly colored par
rot hand puppet. The macaw
leered at the puppet with a
superior look.
Daisy, the flower-backed box
turtle, came next followed by
Poe, the ball python.
St. Clair invited the children
to bring their parents to the
Animal Park at the Chehaw
Parks, where they can visit the
more than 200 animals that live
there.
At the close of her show, St.
Clair invited the children to file
by and pet the ball python and
the box turtle. She also had on
display a collection of animal
artifacts, such as an alligator
skull, for the children to see.
Perdue and his wife Mary also
have twin 4-year-old grand
daughters, Sunni and Mary
Kate.
“The governor is very excited
to have a happy, healthy addi
tion to the family,” said Dan
McLagan, a spokesman for
Perdue.
