Slipped joints
Now that you understand that
don’t slip discs, let me explain
the mechanics of slipped joints,
otherwise known as “joint dys
function.” Actually, joints don’t
slip either, but they do buckle,
jam, twist, wrench, compress,
and misalign in many directions.
“Joint complex dysfunction” is
the latest term now used to
describe the phenomenon of
most back problems, and this
includes joints, ligaments, ten
dons, and muscles around the
joint capsules.
First of all, most spinal prob
lems begin during childhood
when kids are active, playing
sports like football, basketball,
gymnastics, falling off
bicycles/horses,
rollerskates/blades, jumping off
playground equipment, to name
but a few of the many ways kids
can jar their spines, laying the
seeds of future back pain and
scoliosis.
I recall an incident when my
daughter was only 5 years old,
while doing a cartwheel, her
hand slipped and she fell on her
head, jamming her neck badly.
She came to me asking, “Daddy,
I need some popcorn,” which is
the term we use to describe a
spinal adjustment, which often
sounds like a pop. When I did
adjust her neck, the popcorn
was incredibly louder than nor
mal, she got immediately relief,
then looked at me with her big
brown eyes and said, “Daddy,
I’m really glad you’re a chiro
practor.” After I stopped beam
ing, I thought to myself how
right she was, but sadly how
most daddies aren’t chiroprac
tors and when their kids have
spinal accidents, they generally
go undetected, uncorrected, and
lead to scoliosis and adult prob
lems later.
When you “throw out your
back,” generally you’ve
wrenched the spinal joints some
how just like when a football
knee is damage. These joints can
be hyper-extended or hyper
flexed, or they can buckle from
too much compression, which is
what happens in most cases.
Just sitting at a desk can com
press your spinal joints, so it
doesn’t take a violent injury to
cause a back attack. And those
traumatic accidents never go
away completely, but they do
linger on to become chronic
problems that can be exacerbat
ed by common daily activities.
Back pain is mostly joint pain,
not disc or muscle pain. Yes, the
muscles become spastic and the
disc may swell, but the primary
source of back pain rests in the
joints. There are many little
nerves in the joints themselves
called proprioceptor nerves,
specifically, mechanoreceptors,
that when compressed cause the
joint pain itself, and may also
cause a nerve reflex that leads to
the intense muscle spasms.
Then the discs may then swell,
just like the soft tissues in a
sprained ankle will swell and, if
left uncorrected, this may lead
later to disc degeneration.
But as you can see, this occurs
after the mechanics of the spinal
vertebrae are distorted and the
spinal joints become dysfunc
tional. In other words, disc prob
lems are secondary to the
integrity of the joints them
selves and no disc will swell, her
niate, rupture, or degenerate
and no nerve will get pinched
until the alignment of the verte
brae is so bad it causes undue
pressure on the disc cartilage.
Once your spine buckles, just
like a car accident will buckle
the sheet metal causing it to
crimp, this creases the metal
and will become a lifetime weak
ness due to joint and soft tissue
damage - those ligaments, ten
dons and muscle that support
the joint are damaged as well. As
you gracefully age, muscles get
weaker and it becomes easier to
have a reoccurring injury, which
in many cases began in your
childhood. As Bob Hope once
said, “you know you’re getting
old when your back goes out
more often than you do.” Now
you know why he was correct!
