Northside all-around athlete Roderick Haywood press pulls 265 pounds Tuesday at the school
during the annual Ironman competition. Coaches think he has a chance to place in the event
but he’ll have to do somewhat better. They said they expect a 285 or higher to be the score to
beat.

“It’s a thing to look forward
to,” Nix said.
“The good thing about it as
that we have a lot of different
divisions.”
Nix also uses the contest as a

his team to prepare them for the
Series.
“We ain’t got enough time to
get as good as we want to get,”
Brown explained. “We really
haven’t had time to gel.”
Brown worries about such trav
eling teams, as the East Cobb
Aztecs who recruit players from
all over the country. He also
knows that the Puerto Rican
teams will be strong too.
But because eight out of ten
players have the ability to be good
pitchers, the head coach doesn’t
worry very much.
“I can close my eyes and throw
anyone I want,” Brown explained.
“I’ll put my eight pitchers up
against anyone’s eight pitchers.
The deeper we get into the tour
nament, the more the odds swing
in our favor.”
Brown estimates his team’s
record to be around 20-13 for the
season. The Prospects took some
time off recently and went 2-1 in
a tournament they played last
week. Their head coach wants the
pitchers to get some time in on
the mound before they head to
Florida. He feels plenty confident
in the fielding and batting, so that
they can focus on the pitching.
“If we throw strikes, we can
win,” Brown stated.
“If our pitchers and team play
like I know they can, we can play
er with any team in the country.”
The tournament will run from
Sunday the 27th until Tuesday
the 29th and be played at the
Astro's training facility. The
Prospects will play 52 of the top
teams in the country, starting
with pool play. If prosper in pool
play, the Prospects will move on to
a double elimination champi
onship bracket but should they
lose, they will enter a single elim
ination consolation bracket.
According to Brown, anything
can happen in the coming week.
“If two weeks from now, you
told me we’d won it all,” Brown
said.
“I’d believe ya.”

“It’s something that’s been

your program,” he said.

Three keys help
ensure healthy
success in sports
By Bill Goggin
PGA Professional, Landings Golf Club
Special to the HHJ
WARNER ROBINS
Success in golf or any
sports for that matter
might very well hinge on three things:
Athletic ability, coachability and
determination.
Athletic abOty
Golf is a sport where the more coor
dinated you are the better are your
chance of success. Genetics plays a big
part in determining your athletic abil
ity. There are many things you can do
to improve your athletic ability. Keep
yourself in good physical condition.
Stretch your muscles. Maintain an
ideal body weight. Increase your
endurance to reduce fatigue.
Strengthen your muscles so they will
perform optimally.
Some people have more God given
talent than others.
Some people get more out of what
they have. Golfers are made not born.
You don’t have to be a Michael Jordan
to be a great golfer.
Coachabßty
With some exceptions, most great
players have coaches. Many are self
taught and only seek advice when
needed. Some work with coaches con
tinually to fine time their games.
The idea here is to be on a continu
ous path to improvement.
Be open to new ideas. If you a stu
dent is truly coachable he will have a
better road map to success. Find
someone that can help you get where
you want to go.
This works for golf and all aspects
of life.
Detormtaation
This is the big one. A determined
player will beat an athletic player over
the long run. Determination means
many things. A determined player
works harder and practices more.
A determined person is mentally
tough and does not beat himself. Have
a strategy, work hard and be pre
pared. These are traits of determined
people.
People are a mixture of all three of
these traits.
We have all known athletically gift
ed people with no work ethic. We all
know people who want to learn and
are not afraid to work for success.
Golf is a great game.
If you are not a Michael Jordan,
practice hard and learn the basics.
