Alabama’s new head coach Mike Shula is very compli mentary of the Razorbacks they’ll meet this week (Saturday, 3:30 p.m.), con science that the team earned their lofty ranking. “Arkansas is a team that has a little bit of every thing,” Shula said in a press conference this week. “They've got maybe a lot of everything: size upfront especially on the offensive line. They've got speed on both sides of the ball with their wide receivers, with their back, with their quar terback. “Defensively their corners are very fast, good cover cor ners. And they've got some experience, too. I think that's why they’re playing as well as maybe anybody in the country right now. So it's going to be a great challenge for our guys. “We've got to have great preparation just like we've had the last few weeks and then go out there and make it pay off on Saturday night. That's what we are going to talk to our players about when they come in today.” Shula respects Arkansas, but he has to get his pro style offense ready. Last year Arkansas was primarily a defensive team, but quarter back Matt Jones has another year in the system is even more capable this year. He can run the option as well as throw deep and harmless enough but a per sonal foxil on third and long gave them the ball on the Bear’s 14-yard line. A run yielded nothing. Bottom line, Arkansas is the real deal, worthy of the ninth ranking, and is playing the SEC’s best football this season. HHJ Predication: Arkansas 30, Alabama 21 South CaroHna at No. 8 Temessoo, ESPN 7:45 p.m. South Carolina head coach Lou Holtz said Monday he is concerned about his team’s ability to play well on the road. After getting blown out 31-7 in Athens the Gamecocks travel to Rocky Top Saturday night. “I don’t know what to expect,” Holtz said at his press conference Monday. “Beating Florida on the road was impressive (for Tennessee). They are ranked No. 8 in the country, but are in the top five in scoring defense and rush defense, only allowed 2.0 yards per carry, which is unbelievable when you consider the schedule they have played. Tennessee is one of the top 10 in the nation in rushing offense.” Holtz’s preparation is not limited to the rushing offense of the Vols, but he said that is where he started. “They have two running backs, Cedric Houston and Jabari Davis, who are first and fifth in the conference in rushing and the average over 200 yards per game combined,” Holtz said. “Their offensive line is very good and all about 300 pounds and very athletic. passes. The question then was to go for it on fourth down or try for the field goal. “We wanted to go for the touchdown,” said head coach Bob Stinchcomb who played against Johnson at Appling State. “There was never a doubt ... we wanted the touchdown.” They obviously didn’t get it. We’re just trying to do a lot of things.” Jones was especially pleased that he was able to play his entire team Friday night. Typically not every player that dons the green and white is able to play in every game, but every play er on the team can now say they’ve played at least one down in 2003. “It’s fun,” Jones said. “When some of them play B • ,j|—B i; [firestone AMERICA S HOME FOR TIRES & SERVICE FR3BO j Our everyday lowest pricet Firestone lire! umm EXPERT TIRE LOCATIONS CM Mad, Map- UOL-M.7M4* Sit 7aHpa • ta. 9ts-5p Colonial Mai Macon 3859 BmMsmt Pkwy. • 474-8106 Jan Mu, huh 1 MaL-frt7w4p tit 7»*b • Sn. taMpi THE PLACE JV BE.
