Relief group leaves for Virginia
Classes set for
disaster relief
By Emily Johnstone
HHJ Associate Editor
HOUSTON COUNTY -
Five members of a local dis
aster relief group headed
out about daybreak Friday
morning to travel to
Gloucester, Va., to assist
units feeding victims and
other relief workers during
the aftermath and cleanup
of Hurricane Isabel.
Bill Dabbs, Jean and Mark
Swann, Mary Bradley and
Royce Lynn gathered at the
Rehoboth Baptist
Association offices before
dawn to start their journey
to the area lashed by storm
waters and winds.
Mark Swann said he and
Jean have assisted in relief
efforts in the past, but this
is their first outside
Georgia.
The couple, married 28
years, have been working in
disaster relief since 1994.
They are both trained in a
number of areas such as
clean up and recovery and
feeding.
Dabbs said the team will
assist in feeding thousands
of people a day.
They will spend five days
in Virginia before heading
back home.
The group had their sleep
ing bags packed and ready,
along with their badges,
caps and a few other necessi

Dabbs said such a group is
never sure exactly where
they will be spending their
sleeping hours, but most of
the time they are put into
church Sunday school
rooms.
While in Virginia, the five
will become a part of the
Association’s Stone
Mountain feeding relief
team.
Jean Swann said she
enjoys helping people in a
way that shows them that
others and Jesus love them.
Meanwhile, task leader
Ronald Clements is gearing
up for training classes in
disaster relief set for Jan. 9
and 10 at Westside Baptist
Church in Centerville.
Clements said classes are
open to believers who are
looking to help their fellow
man in times of need.
Classes include feeding
groups, cleanup and recov
ery, communications, child
care and crisis counseling,
he said.
When classes wrap up
Saturday, the feeding group
in training will prepare
lunch for all class members,
Clements said.
Cost is $35 per person and
that includes material, a hat
and the meal, he added.
Clements said he urges
interested people to register
now because there are a lim
ited number of spaces avail
able.
You can contact him at
