ALABAMA— CaIIed 'the football that
changed the South," the University of Alabama
defeated the University of Washington, 20-19, at
the 1926 Rose Bowl. It was the first time a South
ern team was invited to a bowl game.
ARKANSAS —Architect Edward Durell
Stone, born in 1902 in Fayetteville, designed the
Museum of Modem Art, which opened in 1939
in New York City, with Philip Goodwill.
FLORIDA —Dr. Robert Good, immunologist
at All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, per
formed the first successful bone marrow trans
plant in 1968 at the University of Minnesota.
GEORGIA— On a 1765 botanical expedi
tion, John and William Bartram of Philadelphia
discovered a grove of Franklinia trees along the
Altamaha River, returned for seeds, and saved the
species from extinction.
KENTUCKY— Mockingbird Valley (pop.
190) is the state's wealthiest city with a median
per capital income of $134,745.
LOUISIANA —ln the 17(X)s, the Natchi
toches and Caddo Indians produced salt at Drake's
Salt Works at Golclonna (pop. 457).
MISSISSIPPI —The Crystal Springs (pop.
5,873) Memorial Tomato Museum opened last
April to document the town’s late-18(X)s status as
a leading tomato producer.
NORTH CAROLINA— More than 180,(XX)
patterns and 10 million pieces of new and used
china, crystal, and silver can be found at Replace
ments Ltd. in Greensboro.
SOUTH CAROLINA—In 1863, Henry
McNeal Turner became the first African-Ameri
can chaplain in the U.S. Army. He grew up near
Abbeville (pop. 5,842).
TENNESSEE —Since the 19305, the
Holtkamp family has shaped the African vio
let industry worldwide and developed the
Optimara violet in 1977 at Holtkamp
Greenhouses in Nashville.
VIRGINIA —An 1807 shot tower used for
making lead ammunition is the centerpiece
of Shot Tower Historical State Park in
Austinville. Molten lead, dropped in a sieve
at the top of the 150-foot tower, formed per
fect spheres as it fell to water below.
WEST VIRGINIA —EIkins (pop. 7,032) has
its own Graceland, an 1893 stone mansion built
by U.S. Sen. Henry Gassaway Davis and named
