Help! My bpowser's
been hijacked!
Dear TechnoFiles:
I recently had my
browser hijacked by an
unwanted search engine.
I’ve since removed it, but
was wondering what I
could do to prevent this
from happening in the
first place. What security
settings do you recom
mend for Internet
Explorer? - Jason in
Bonaire
Dear Jason:
Here are my recommend
ed Security settings for
Internet Explorer. They
help prevent unscrupulous
Web sites from installing
spyware and parasites with
out your knowledge. First,
close all instances of
Internet Explorer and
Outlook. Open the Control
Panel and click Internet
Options. Click on the
“Security” tab, highlight the
“Internet” icon, and click
“Custom Level.” Use the fol
lowing settings:
• “Download signed
ActiveX scripts” = Prompt
• “Download unsigned
ActiveX scripts = Disable
• “Initialize and script
ActiveX not marked as safe”
= Disable
• “Installation of Desktop
items” = Prompt
• “Launching programs
and files in a 1 FRAME” =
Prompt
Click on the “Content”
tab, Click the “Publishers”
button. Highlight and click
“Remove any unknowns,”
click OK. Click on the
“Advanced” tab and
uncheck “Install on demand
(other)”, click Apply or OK.
To prevent spyware and
parasites from installing on
your system, make sure
your security settings are
set to the minimum levels as
outlined above. You also
need to install a firewall
(Zone Alarm is a good one
and it’s free!) and make sure
you have an Antivirus pro
gram installed with the lat
est updates. You might also
download Ad-Aware or
Spyßot, both of which will
detect most, but not all
unwanted programs from
installing on your computer.
- Tina
Dear TechnoFiles:
Whenever I reinstall
Windows 2000 on my lap
top computer, I have to
connect to Windows
Update and spend a
whole day on a slow dial
up connection to update
my system with all the
security patches. Is there
an easy alternative so I
can do it once and save
some time? - Joel in
Warner Robins
Dear Joel:
Windows Update is handy.
You can just open Internet
Explorer, go to Tools and
Windows Update and follow
the prompts that will scan
your computer (all without
sending any information
back to Microsoft - yeah,
right!) and tell you what
updates and patches you
need. However, to download
them directly, and then burn
them to CD, for reinstalla
tion anytime you want
them, simply go to the
Microsoft update site,
http://v4.windowsupdate.mi
crosoft.com/catlog/en/ and
choose the downloads you
want, saving them to your
hard drive for burning on
CD later. The big disadvan
tage from the automatic
method of updating your
computer is that you’ll have
to run each patch and
update separately unless
you’re really knowledgeable
about writing batch files.
Still, this may be much
faster if you reinstall often
and have a slow download
connection. - Jason

t is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer.
About 211,300 women in the United States will be found to have invasive breast cancer in 2003.
About 39,800 women will die from the disease.
Breast cancer death rates declined significantly from 1992 to 1996, with the largest decrease in
younger women— both white and black. This decline is probably the result of earlier detection and
improved treatment.
Early detection can save your life. To schedule a mammogram, call 322-5175 or for more
information on breast cancer, visit Houston Healthcare’s website at www.hhc.org or www.cancer.org.
