ATLANTA (AP) Atlanta
Hawks starter Stephen Jackson
is planning to be a free agent
after the season.
In an announcement that
means the Hawks will have only
four players under contract going
into the offseason, Jackson said
Sunday that he will not pick up
the option on the second year of
his two-year, $2.1 million deal.
Considering Jackson rejected
a three-year, $lO million offer
from the San Antonio Spurs last
summer, his announcement is not
a surprise.
"I'm free after this year,"
Jackson said. "I'm totally free. I
don't know if I'm going to be here
next year or not. I know I'll have a
job somewhere next year. No
matter what, I'm going to be
happy."
By Jackson opting out, the
Hawks would have another $1
million in cap space to work with
this summer.
Jackson said the recent trades
that sent away Shareef Abdur-
Rahim, Theo Ratliff and Rasheed
Wallace did not influence his deci
sion.

He played for the Braves from
1991 through 1993 and again in

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) The
Cleveland Browns won a coin flip
with the Atlanta Falcons for the
seventh overall pick in the NFL
draft.
By losing the toss Saturday,
the Falcons will get the eighth first
round pick in the April 24th draft,
the teams said.
Cleveland ended last season
5-11, the same record as Atlanta,
Washington, Detroit, Jacksonville
and Houston. Various tiebreakers
gave the No. 5 pick to the
Redskins and No. 6 to the Lions.
Jacksonville will select ninth
and Houston tenth.
It's the second time In three
years that Cleveland has won a
coin flip to move ahead of Atlanta.
In 2002, Cleveland won a coin
toss with Atlanta for the 16th pick,
which they used to select William
Green.

BALDWIN Six teams,
Baldwin, Dublin, Houston
County, Mountain Brook,
from Birmingham, Ala., Tift
County and Warner Robins,
met at Baldwin High School
in its soccer invitational tour
nament.
It was a great day for mud
ders, those players who play
well in the midst of grime
and goo.
Baldwin’s field had not
dried from recent rains so
with three players out with
injuries and others nursing
aches and pains, Warner
Robins coach Andy Bailey
had to conserve his
resources.
“These tournaments are
vital,” Bailey said. “Last
year, we lost our main scorer
Michael McClure to gradua
tion. With inexperienced
scorers, this tournament is
good experience.”
For senior center middle
man J.P Gallagher, it was a
good place to test his recov
ery. He injured his knee in
premier league play over the
summer and will have to
wear a brace for a year.
“We need to learn to pass
the ball from the flats,”
Gallagher said.
In their first match Friday
night, the Demons lost to
Tift Co. 2-1.
“We’re not getting the ball
in the box,” Bailey said.
“We’re not getting into act
ing position.”
Bailey looks at the tourna
ment as a chance to face good
competition so that his team
can get the experience it
needs going into region com
petition.
“We’ve gotten off to a slow
start very quickly,” Bailey
said. “We played four games
in a week.”
The Demons played the
Fighting Irish to 1-1 tie in its
Saturday morning game.
Baldwin's Tristin Butcher
put his team on top with a
goal midway through the
first half.
“We just can’t score,”
Bailey said. "We’ve had
opportunities, we’re just not
putting the ball in the net.”

Bears end meet with positives
By Joe Sersey
HHJ Sports Writer
BALDWIN Houston
County participated in the
Baldwin High School
Invitational Soccer
Tournament Friday and
Saturday.
The Bears came away with
two wins and a tie, a good out
ing for a team in rebuilding
mode.
“(The tournament) allows
us to see a lot of players,”
HoCo head coach Chris
McCook. “It helps us develop
chemistry.”
Favored to be one of the
contenders for the 2-AAAAA
region crown, McCook is hav
ing to work players at posi
tions that new to them.
“We have three people who
have never played center mid
dle,” McCook said. “We’re try
ing desperately to develop
some chemistry at center mid
dle and our wings.”
It looked like chemistry was
not a problem as the Bears
easily handled Dublin and
Baldwin.
The only glitch in the week
end was the 1-1 tie with
Mountain Brook out of
Birmingham, Ala.
“We bring good teams who
show good sportsmanship,”
said Baldwin coach Chip
Lundy of his tournament.
“Warner Robins, Houston
County and Dublin always
come.”
For coaches, they have a
chance to evaluate personnel
without the pressure of region
games.
“Our passing is probably
our strongest thing,” McCook
said. “We’re still staying one
sided and not holding shape.”
Nobody can deny that what
ever shape they’re in,
Houston County can score.
In the three matches, the
Bears out shot their oppo
nents every match.
Four different players
scored against Dublin, and
three different player scored
against Baldwin. Defenders
even get involved in the scor
ing.
Bryce Wyatt dribbled the
ball from his defensive spot at
midfield for an attempt at goal
that just missed.
Meanwhile, the Bears
defense allowed only one goal
all weekend.
In the game against the
Fighting Irish, the Bears were
three up at the half and scored
one more goal late in the
game.
