HCHS students getting ready for lifetime learning

WARNER ROBINS - A
new world of communica
tions and informatibn has
arrived, and school libraries
are now called media cen
ters (for good reason) but
some things never change.
Libraries are still hush
hush places where individ
ual learning is under way
and young people are
encouraged to learn the
basics of independent
research and to do their own
driving on the information
superhighway - mastering
skills that can pay off for a
lifetime. .
Dr. Patricia Leggate is a
media specialist at Houston
County High School. She
has been at this school since
it opened, continuing her

At a recent open house the
school hosted to show par
ents how wireless technolo
gy is becoming a part of
everyday education for stu
dents, Leggate showed par
ents and students how to
access “Galileo,” a major
search engine and Georgia’s
virtual library, on the laptop
computers in the media cen
ter.
“It’s better than Google,”
Leggate said, pointing out
that the Galileo system
includes massive research
capacity, including entire
magazines on specialized
topics.
Students can also scan
documents and print pages
for research projects.
This doesn’t mean that

Beginning Center located at
210 Garmon St.

als, the old card catalog is
gone. That’s all on comput
er, too.
Times have changed, and
the tools are high-tech, but
it’s still all about independ
ent reading, learning and
research.
