Bonaire Elementary School student Abby Burnette (left) won the 2004 National
Geographic Bee at the school level. The first-place runner-up was Jillian Erickson (cen
ter) and Evan Hopf. Abby received a medal and all three receive certificates. Abby will
now take a qualifying test for the chance to compete in the national competition in
Washington, D.C.

Eleven members (pictured) of the Houston County Career and Technology Center
Future Business Leaders of America Chapter traveled to Fort Valley State University on
Jan. 23 to participate in the FBLA Region V competition. Members competed against
students from the 22 schools in Region V in seven different events covering various
business subject areas. Three of the 11 members placed in the top five and advanced
to state competition In their respective events. Those members are Ashley Howard
(third place in job interview), Jessica Perry (second place in business communications)
and Jennifer Coates (fourth place in Word Processing I). A team of four members who
represented the chapter in a Monopoly tournament at Fall Leadership will advance to
state competition in Athens in March as well.

Ju//a Celebi, director of Middle Georgia Youth Science and Technology Center,
recently visited Kristi Kaiser’s fifth-grade class at Eagle Springs Elementary School.
Celebi conducted hands-on science experiments dealing with the erosion of the
earth’s crust and the formation of landforms. Pictured doing an experiment are stu
dents Chelsea Corrigan, Shaquora Jamison, and Austin Rice.

Northslde High School Future Buslnass Leaders of America members excelled In
region competition at Fort Valley State University Jan. 23. Thirteen Northslde stu
dents ware recognized as award winners. Furthermore, Northslde’s FBLA members
won first place In 5 of the 17 events. Medal winners (pictured) Include Erika Styles
(fifth place as Cooperative Business Education Student of the Year), April Gordon
(third place In Computer Applications), Katorah Gray (first place In Public Speaking
I), Leigh Vamedore (fifth place In Business Communications), Jessica Paul (second
place as Cooperative Business Education Student of the Year), Jennifer Forgue (first
place, Desktop Publishing Team), Savanna Cooper (first place In Job Interview),
Amanda Briscoe (first place In Word Processing I), Attila Thomas (first place, Desktop
Publishing Team) and Andy Holland (fourth place, Future Business Leader). Not pic
tured are winners Mindy Moore (first In Website Development) and Jennifer
Blackmon and Christina D’Onofrio (fifth place, Multimedia Presentation Teem).
These winners will now advance to the FBLA State Leadership Conference, which
will be In Athens on March 12-13.
