Pinwheels signify chiU safety
By Emily Johnstone

PERRY - Child Safety
Month in Houston County
kicked off late last week at
the county courthouse in
Perry with a ceremony that
included placing 355 pin
wheels on the front lawn of
the facility.
During the event,
Houston County Juvenile
Court Judge Deborah
Edwards noted the many
different volunteer pro
grams that offer assistance
to children.
She told the group that
she deals with child depriva
tion as well as delinquency.
Many times the two are
connected, said the judge.
“The boundaries between
the two are very fluid,” she
said, citing one case in
which a youngster was
charged with writing bad
checks. The girl told the
judge she wrote the checks
to a local grocery store
because her family needed
food.
Edwards said education is
of utmost importance in a
child’s life.
Teachers have a leverage
that can affect families in a
positive way, she added.
Also during the ceremony
local officials signed a
proclamation recognizing
April as Child Safety Month
in Houston County.
Centerville Mayor Ronnie
Brand, Perry Mayor Jim
Worrall and Col. Richard
Griffith of Robins Air Force
Base were on hand to sign
the document.
Carol Hanna, executive
director of the Rainbow
House Children’s Resource
Center thanked different
organizations and civic
groups that support pro
grams to prevent child
abuse in the area.
The Robins Elementary
School chorus provided spe
cial music for the program.
Afterward, the trek was
made to the front of the
courthouse lawn as atten
dees placed 355 pinwheels in
the ground.
Each pinwheel represents
a child who was the victim of
abuse and neglect in 2003.
On Wednesday, a special
program will be held at the
