Houston County’s Andrew Hardie reacts to a ball zipped by his head early in the first
half. He had the pleasure minutes later of scoring the Bears' lone goal.

a Northside player had been
offside prior to the goal. The
player in question had
rushed towards the front of
the goal to head a cross from
Andres Perez-Rivas, and got
just enough of the ball to
advance it to the far post for
Mayo.
“It was a judgement call
on the referee’s part,”
Northside coach Rusty Lane
said after the game. “From
what I saw, the man estab
lished himself. However,
according to the rulebook, if
the referee feels that the
man establishes himself to
gain an advantage, then it’s
his judgement call.
“When I talked to the ref
eree, he felt that the player
had established himself, and
therefore gained an advan
tage. He didn’t clarify (who
it was*.
“At first, I assumed it was
my right-winger. But the
ball was bouncing around so
quickly, I don’t know if it
was my center forward or
right wing.”
Tuesday’s match was
intense all over the field. .As
the game went on, the dif
ferences in the two teams’
styles became apparent.
Northside brought
tremendous speed and grit
often looking like the lit
tle brother sensing Tuesday
was his night to shine.
Houston County relied on
a stingy team defense and
fluid midfield play to gener
ate a wealth of corner kicks
and shots on goal.
Senior Deontai Price got
the Eagles on the board
when he corralled a cross
from Sean Mayo at the far
post and bumped it past
Harris in the 14th minute.
Houston County’s Andy
Hardee answered 10 min
utes later with a put-back
off a teammate’s errant
header.
Hardee and the Bears’
offense won six corner kicks
and generated nine clear
shots on goal, but it did not
impress coach Chris
McCook.
“We’re not hungry,”
McCook said. “We played
adequate, at best. But
Northside played well
tonight.
“They deserved to win
tonight. I’m not sure about
that last call down there I
couldn’t see down there. But

I thought they played well.”
“I thought we came out a
little flat several times in
the first and second halves,
and just didn’t look like we
were that hungry. We’re a
good team, but right now,
we’re just underachieving. I
just don’t see us playing up
to our potential.”
Northside has Id points
with Tuesday’s tie. Lane
estimates they’ll need 18 to
assure themselves the last
playoff spot. (A win counts
for 3 points; a tie 1 point).
Lane and the Eagles are
aiming to win out.
Houston County needs to
avoid another tie for a play
off berth, as well. Their two
remaining games are
against Henry County and
Warner Robins.
“I hope somebody steps
us, because we’ve yet to play
as well as we can play.”
McCook said.

“They (Northside) deserve
to be in the playoffs. I don’t
know what they have to get
in, but they're a good team.
Northside did a good job
tonight.”
“In fact, at halftime we
corrected a few things and
made a few adjustments,”
he added. “And the guys,
like they’ve done all year
long, once I have my talk,
they get together.”

They continued to work
hard on both ends, but were
victimized by goals from
Gleason (her third) and
Ashleigh Beaver.
“They just outplayed us,
and they deserved to win,”
Wynn suid. “The good thing
about soccer is you can turn
around and do it again.”
“They never quit on me,”
he added, “which tells me a
lot about the character of
my team. I think we’ve got
to be able to start the game
with the same intensity we
played with at times.
“There were times when
we were all over the field
and really controlled the
ball.”
Gleason and Nell were
forced to rotate at two
defensive positions after two
teammates suffered injuries
early and could not return.
“We passed the ball really
well,” Buxley said. “We’ve
been working really hard
the last two or three weeks
on ball control, passing and
spacing.
“I think we’ve gotten a lit
tle bit better each day.”
As it stands now, the Lady
Bears aren’t in the playoffs
for sure, but they are in
good shape. They have
Henry County next week,
then Warner Robins.
As for the Lady Eagles,
“we’ll just practice a couple
of days and get ready for
Warner Robins,” Wynn said.
“Our playoff hopes are still
alive all is not lost. We’ve
just got to take care of the
next game and go from
there.”
