Potter related the role
each man played that day:
Emmons improvised a
tourniquet with his tie to
stop the bleeding from
Sutcliffs wound; Johnson
used a bungee cord to secure
the tourniquet; and Wyatt
took Sutcliff to the hospital
in his patrol car.
Several rounds of
applause were given, and
the council and the crowd
gave the four a standing
ovation as they were hon
ored.
Councilman Billy Jerles
led the round of praise that
followed, having a hard time
coming up with the words to
say how much what the
city’s police officers do
means and settling on the
simple:
“We thank you.”
Councilman James Moore
praised all those who make
the choice to “put on a badge
and put your lives on the
line for us.”
City Attorney David
Walker, who rarely com
ments during these meet
ings, made a point of speak

much he appreciates what
the city’s police force does.
“I’m proud to say they’re
my friends,” he said.

Republican primary to suc

opportunity to pick up a

Eight Democrats vied for
the nomination, but the
winner faces an uphill battle
in a state that has experi
enced a sudden shift to the
right in the last two years.
Freshman Rep. Denise
Majette led the field and was
assured of at least a spot in a
runoff in three weeks.
With 65 percent of
precincts reporting, Isakson
had 214,264 votes, or 53 per
cent, followed by former
Godfather’s Pizza CEO
Herman Cain, who had
106,099 votes, or 26 percent.
Six-term Rep. Mac Collins
was in third with 20 percent.
On the Democratic side,
Majette had 127,396 votes,
or 37 percent, compared
with 76,789 votes, or 22 per

(The council passed a
proclamation to this effect
at a May meeting.)
Following these presenta
tions, the council proceeded
to the business at hand.
The council approved a
property swap between the
city and Perry United
Methodist Church, in which
the city will obtain a parcel
adjacent to its Garden Park
and the church will acquire
a strip of property adjacent
to its western boundary.
The item was tabled earli
er this month, to allow time
for associated costs to be dis
cussed.
Included in the deal is a
request to make a portion of
Carroll Street - that bit
adjacent to the church,
between Washington and
Meeting streets - a one-way
street, thus continuing the
one-way traffic along that
street from downtown.
The deal also requests
some curb work and land
scaping from the city and
provides that the portion of
Meeting Street between
Carroll and Commerce
streets be closed to accom
ed 50 percent of the vote. In
North Carolina, the thresh
old was 40 percent.
Democrats dominated
Georgia until 2002, when
Sonny Perdue became the
state’s first Republican gov

Perdue also persuaded four
