project.
“When technology and
operations come together,
that’s always the tough
part, always the tense part,”
McGannon said.
He explained that the
transition process was going
the way Capt. Ricky
Harlowe wanted it - one
console at a time. While calls
were coming in, they were
still being dispatched on the
old analog system until each
was up and running on the
800-megahertz digital sys
tem.
There were plenty of
beaming Motorola faces
around, as well, including
that of George Thames, an
area sales manager with the
technology company’s
Atlanta office.
Thames said Tuesday was
the culmination of 18
months of work, from plan
ning and design to imple
mentation and training.
A banner at the back of
the room, signed by county
emergency personnel, her

Motorola’s Astro Integrated

System. It’s the first all-dig

set up in Georgia.
“This is the first system
that uses our latest technol
ogy platform, and it will be
the foundation of all our
mission-critical systems as
we go forward,” Thames
said.
He said such a system has
several advantages for
Houston County - it’s more
reliable, offers clearer com
munication, and the capaci
ty to serve the county for
years to come.
“The old system was
crowded, and had spots in
the county where officers
couldn’t talk,” Thames said.
“This system was designed
to handle all the problems.”
Furthermore, the new sys
tem is multi-jurisdictional,
he said, bringing together
all public safety personnel
for the first time.
For Talton, it’s a matter of
protecting his troops in the
field. The sheriff said he is
grateful to the voters who
favored the adoption of a
special purpose local option
sales tax that covered the
cost of buying the new sys
tem.
“It’s the people who made
this possible,” Talton said.
