In the race for Houston
County Tax Commissioner, a
run-off may be necessaiy. With
22 precincts reporting, Mark
Kushinka was leading his two
opponents with 2,536 votes or
45.4 percent. Judy Kluge had
1,821 votes or 32.6 percent, and
Judy Golden had 1,235 votes or
22.1 percent. For a victory,
Kushinka would have to have
50 percent plus 1 vote.
Otherwise a run-off is required
with the second-highest candi
date.
In the race for Houston
County Board of Education
Post incumbent Tom Walmer
was leading his opponent Frank
Chemey substantially, but not
enough precincts had reported
at press time for results to be
predicted. Walmer had 569
votes to Chemey’s 314 with
four precincts reporting.
Incumbent Houston County
Coroner Danny Galpin was
winning handily over three
time challenger Cam Bryant,
with 3,726 votes or 68.3 percent
to Bryant’s 1,733 votes or 31.85
percent.
State races
For Public Service
Commissioner, Robert Beker Jr.
held a substantial lead in the
Republican primary with 4,013
votes or 77.61 percent, while
Roger Dozier and Terry
Taschwer trailed behind with
760 and 398 votes respectively.
In the Democratic primary
for Public Service
Commissioner, Mac Barber was
the Houston county favorite
with 1,547 votes to Michael R.
Berlon’s 619.
For State Senate District 26,
Dale Washburn and Greg
Williams were neck and neck at
press time with 128 votes for
Washburn and 112 for
Williams. The winner will face
Democrat Rep. Robert Brown
in November.
For State Senate District 18,
in the Republican primary,
Cecil Staton was leading Meg
Nichols 1,255 to 954 votes. The
winner will face Democrat Ben
H. Taylor in November.
For State Supreme Court
Justice, incumbent Leah Sears
was ahead of challenger Grant
Brantley in Houston County.
Sears had 4,330 votes, or 55.4
percent to Brantley’s 3,470
votes or 44.4 percent.
U.S. Senate
In Houston County, in the
Republican primary for U.S.
Senate, with 22 of 30 precincts
reporting, Johnny Isakson was
winning with 3,108 votes or
53.8 percent, to 1,840 (31.8 per
cent) for Herman Cain, and 826
(14.31 percent) for Mac Collins.
