Burke appointed to prosecute Bibb case
MACON - Two Bibb
County magistrate judges
and a court employee had
until today to turn them
selves in on charges of
receiving illegal payments to
perform marriage cere
monies while on duty,
authorities said.
Judges Dorothy Pertilla
and Selinda Handsford and
court clerk Janet Gray have
been indicted on charges of
taking a fee from couples to
marry them at the Bibb
County Courthouse from
June to September 2003.
They are on leave with pay.
Special prosecutor Kelly
Burke said that he has

“Technology reaches into
every aspect of every organi
zation and no one person
can do it all. It has become
so much more complex,”
Reeves said.
Reeves said one of the
goals of GAMEIS is to get
smaller school systems to
participate to find out how
they can implement technol
rants for all three to the
Bibb County sheriffs office.
According to state law,
judges cannot take pay
ments for wedding cere
monies performed on duty
but they can take money if
they perform a ceremony
during off-duty hours or if
they are retired.
Handsford was indicted on
eight counts of theft by tak
ing and one count of viola
tion of oath of office, and
Pertilla was indicted on
seven counts of theft by tak
ing and one count of viola
tion of oath of office, accord
ing to court records. Gray
was indicted on 14 counts of
theft by taking, one count of
ogy into their classrooms.
“This organization was
found to help each other,
there’s no since in reinvent
ing the wheel. We are going
to do all we can to reach out
for more participation,”
Reeves said.
Reeves said this position
would help bring more tech
nology insight into the local
school system. “It will be a
forum for exchange of ideas
and solutions.

In some cases, couples

would be asked to pay a

court records.
Burke, the Houston
County Circuit district
attorney appointed by the
state attorney general’s
office to investigate the
court, said his investigation
is ongoing.

According to Reeves, “The
membership of GAMEIS has
a long and rich history of
being at the forefront of crit
ical issues regarding the use
of information technology in
Georgia’s public school sys
tems. We have been deeply
involved in efforts ranging
from the Quality Basic

of the 1980 s up to the cur

program.”

“It better served the needs
of the community,” Frost
said.
The camp gives kids an
option for summer activi

“I think they get more out
of it from being part of a
small group,” Frost said.
“They become very attached
to their new friends by the
end of the summer.”
The kids take two to three
craft classes a week. Besides
making arts and crafts, kids
play sports, go swimming
twice a week at the Sewell

“What I like the best is
playing pool, basketball and
kickball and playing Cross

of Whiteside Elementary in
Illinois said.
Frost said the kids and
parents have cooperated
nicely.
“And I’ve got terrific coun
selors here,” she said.
Frost noted the camp ben
efits parents because the
kids get out of the house for
the summer and have a
place to go while the parents
are working.
“But it still leaves a few
weeks for the kids to vaca
tion, visit their grandpar
ents and other family-ori
ented things,” she said.
Frost said the community
has been very supportive.
Arby’s on Watson Boulevard
has provided lunch for the
kids.
“That was awesome,”
Frost said. Wendy’s gave the
kids coupons for Frosty’s.
