Tolleson named
committee chair

ATLANTA - The Senate
Committee on Assignments
has appointed Sen. Ross
Tolleson (R-Perry) as chair
man of the Senate Natural
Resources and the
Environment Committee.
“Tolleson brings critical
experience at managing our
natural resources along
with a remarkable ability to
deal with the complex and
emotional issues that flow
through this vital Senate
committee,” Senate
President Pro Tempore Eric
Johnson (R-Savannah) said.
“By representing the former
district of retiring Sen.
Hugh Gillis, he will be able
to draw on his wisdom and
counsel as we try to balance
the demands of the fourth
fastest growing state with
the protection of our envi
ronment.”
Gillis resigned from the
Senate effective July 25,

as “needs-improvement”
schools were Northside
Middle School and the
Houston County Crossroads
Center. Crossroads represents
Watson Center and Elberta
Center, which are combined
alternative schools that
include a middle and high
school.
Northside Middle has iden
tified the area that needs
improvement and has plans to
implement things to help
improve test scores, according
schools tested met the law’s
goals on tests, attendance
minimums and other stan
dards.
At the 442 schools that did
n’t meet the law’s standards,
administrators will scramble
in the two weeks or so before
school starts to offer extra
tutoring for struggling stu
dents and give parents the
option of sending their chil
dren to another, higher-per
forming school.
“Let’s let the rest of the
state see what we have to
offer right here in Perry,”
she said.
Easterly, who will be
attending a family reunion
that day, said it hasn’t
stopped her from supporting
the event.
“I’ve bought a ticket and
am going to give it to some
one,” she said.

Improvement in Atlanta and
implementing data-driven
teaching strategies. Data
driven instruction is based on
teachers looking at individual
student test scores and basing
their lessons on student’s
strengths and weaknesses.
Carpenter said he hopes all
these things will close the gap
and improve instruction for
all students by providing
teachers with test scores.
Due to this the school sys-
