Robins assisted the POW/
MIA group in putting on the
event.
“We help them with the
logistics and that kind of
thing,” said Caryl Deems of
the Robins Pacers.
David Cowles, a member
of the POW/MIA committee
who works at Robins Air
Force Base, said the POW/
MIA group was introduced
in the U.S. seven years ago.
The group, which is rais
ing the funds to build the
memorial, is an internation
al alliance of the POW/MIA
Family Alliance.
“It (the memorial) is going
to give people a place to
go and reflect on the sac
rifice that those that have
gone before us have made,”
Cowles said.
The estimate for the
memorial seven years ago
was $75,000. Inflation
has increased the cost to
$130,000. The POW/MIA
group has raised over
$90,000 for the memorial.

Powell,
others
to leave
Cabinet
By GEORGE GEDDA
The Associated Press
WASHINGTON
Secretary of State Colin
Powell and three other
Cabinet members have
resigned, it was disclosed
Monday, escalating the
shake-up of President
Bush’s second-term team.
Senior administration offi
cials said national security
adviser Condoleezza Rice
was most likely to succeed
Powell.
Powell’s resignation, sub
mitted last Friday, was con
firmed Monday, as were those
of three others - Energy
Secretary Spencer Abraham,
Agriculture Secretary Ann
Veneman and Education
Secretary Rod Paige.
With the resigna
tions earlier of Attorney
General John Ashcroft and
Commerce Secretary Donald
Evans, the departures of six
of 15 Cabinet members have
been revealed. The musical
chairs act assured Bush a
significant Cabinet face-lift
with his second inaugura
tion over two months away.
“I believe that now that
the election is over, the time
has come for me to step
down,” Powell, 67, wrote the
president.
“I am pleased to have
been part of a team that
launched the global war
against terror, liberated the
Afghan and Iraqi people,”
he said. Powell also said he
“brought the attention of
the world to the problem
of proliferation, reaffirmed
our alliances, adjusted to
the post-Cold War world and
undertook major initiatives
to deal with the problem of
poverty and disease in the
developing world.”
The president already has
chosen White House counsel
Alberto Gonzales to succeed
Ashcroft, and speculation on
Powell’s successor also has
focused on U.N. Ambassador
