CENTERVILLE - It was a
long time coming, but now
it’s here - the new
Centerville fire station is
ready for business.
A crowd came out
Saturday evening as the sta
tion was officially put into
service and opened for view
ing.
The facility was formally
dedicated to Robert A.
“Bob” Smith Jr., the city’s
first fire chief, who served
from 1970 to 1985.
The cheering supporters -
firefighter families, retired
firefighters, city officials and
others - enjoyed refresh
ments in the engine room
and got a look around the
place.
Fire Chief Larry Sharpless
gave the nickel tour, starting
in the new engine room,
which has space to comfort
ably house four trucks.
Behind the trucks, a work
out area and hose storage fill
the space.
The adjacent dormitory
section features room to
grow.
With two three-person
bunkrooms, the station can
accommodate up to six fire
fighters on 24-hour duty.
