Thurman to enter draft
ATHENS (AP) - Linebacker
Odell Thurman has joined safety
Thomas Davis as juniors who
will pass up their senior seasons
to enter the 2005 NFL draft, the
Athens Banner-Herald reported
Thursday.
The Atlanta-based STL
Sports Management announced
Thurman's decision Wednesday
night.
In a statement released by
the agency, Thurman said the
economic pressures of caring for
his family influenced his decision
to turn pro. Thurman said he is
responsible for five brothers who
are being cared for by his grand
mother.
Thurman says he still plans to
obtain his degree.
Davis signed with Atlanta
based agent Todd France earlier
this week.
At least two more Georgia
juniors - offensive guard Max
Jean-Gilles and defensive tackle
Gerald Anderson - are consider
ing their NFL options and have
until Jan. 15 to make a decision.
VMma nabs rookie honors
NEW YORK (AP) - Jonathan
Vilma brought exactly what the
New York Jets needed on defense
with a performance so brilliant he
won The Associated Press 2004
NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year
award.
Vilma, the 12th pick in last
year's draft, did it with the speed
and exuberance that convinced
New York to make him the first
linebacker chosen. A terror at the
University of Miami, Vilma moved
into the starting lineup in Game
3 and led a defensive revival
that lifted the Jets (10-6) into the
playoffs.
Houston cornerback Dunta
Robinson was second with 12
votes, followed by Denver LB
D.J. Williams with seven and
Washington safety Sean Taylor
with 3. Williams and Taylor also
played at Miami.
Kansas City end Jared Allen
got two votes. Receiving one
each were Arizona LB Karlos
Dansby, Chicago tackle Tommie
Harris and Seattle safety Michael
Boulware.
Vilma is the third Jets player to
win the award, following McMillan
and end Hugh Douglas (1995).
Last year's winner was Baltimore
linebacker Terrell Suggs.
Fans shun Kobe's jersey
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Kobe
Bryant is no longer a fashion
icon.
For the last month, Bryants
No. 8 Lakers jersey - previously
one of the best sellers in the
world - has fallen out of the
top 50, according to point-of-sale
data tabulated by a Florida mar
ket research firm.
Bryant's NBA jersey was still
the 10th-highest selling jersey
for the year, but he finished the
month of December at No. 72
- and in one week plunged to No.
90, a drastic slide for the player
many once saw as the sport's
next marketing golden boy.
Bryant's marketability has like
ly been hurt by the flurry of bad
press he's been receiving lately,
analysts say. It began with his
rape case and included his feud
with former teammate Shaquille
O'Neal, his spat with current
teammate Karl Malone and a
new book by former coach Phil
Jackson that portrays Bryant as
an aloof prima donna.
Bryant's agent, Rob Pelinka,
did not return calls seeking com
ment. Nike Inc., Bryant’s main
sponsor, also declined to com
ment, saying only that Bryant
remains under contract with the
company.

Coming off one of the best
years in golf, Singh opened the
new season with an early state

the Plantation Course at Kapalua

a 7-under 66 and a one-shot lead
over Craig Parry.
Only four players shot over

ATLANTA (AP) - The Atlanta
Hawks placed guard Tony Delk,
the team’s third-leading scorer,
on the injured list with a sprained
left hand Thursday.
Rookie guard Donta Smith,
who has played only three min
utes in two games, was activated
to fill Delk's roster spot.
Delk is averaging 11.4 points
per game, playing in 22 games
off the bench. He missed the first
eight games with a knee injury.
Smith was placed on the injured
list with a lower back strain on
Nov. 30.
The Hawks played host to
Sacramento Friday night.

Whew! That’s a lot of

This book is great!
You can make your ‘pos

smother it in sweet pota

when someone's done read
ing, they're going to run to
the bookstore looking for
this thing.)
There are recipes for all
kinds of birds - from quail
to duck - turtle, frog legs,
rabbit and fish (even those
tasty - albeit from what I’ve
heard “chewy” - carp).
There’s even a section on
making your own sauces
(see “wine” above - I sus
pect you’ll need to drink
plenty of it before embark
ing on some of these Fear
Factor challenges) and pies
(although, I was disappoint
ed blackbird was left out).
If you can hunt it, thanks
to this book, you can cook it
and eat it.
And why not? Momma

the All-Pro voting, too.
The record-setting
Indianapolis Colts quarter

Thursday for The Associated

Team. Manning received all
48 first-place votes from a
nationwide panel of writers
and broadcasts who cover

Manning broke Dan

for touchdown passes in a
season with 49, and shat

rating mark with a 121.1.
Surprisingly, despite
the Colts’ prolific offense,
Manning was their only
All-Pro on that side of the
ball. Defensive end Dwight
Freeney, the NFL sacks
leader with 16, made it on
defense.
The AFC’s dominance
this season was evident on
the All-Pro team, with 19
players from that confer

NFC. Pittsburgh, With a
15-1 regular-season mark,
