It's never
enough,
is it?
Some days it just don’t
pay to get out of bed. And in
even worse times, it might
be better to keep under the
covers for a couple of weeks.
That has been the state of
affairs for the United States
and President George Bush
ever since the earthquake
struck off the coast of
Sumatra. No matter what
we do it is either too late or
too little. If it weren’t for
the fact that we could not
have lived with ourselves
afterwards, we might just as
well have sat this one out.
From the very start we did
not give enough money. This
despite the fact that nobody
knew just how horrible an
event this was in the first
few days after it struck.
However, since we are the
United States, we should
have been able to see the
future and cut a check for
just the right amount min
utes after the ground
stopped shaking.
President Bush was just
not compassionate enough
soon enough to suit a lot of
people. I suppose that these
people look back fondly on
the days when Slick Willy
Clinton would brush a tear
off his cheek every time a
sparrow fell. Or could it be
that they would not be able
to say anything good to say
about Bush to save their
lives? No ... must fight that
urge to cynicism ... Ah! I
feel much better.
The truth is that the
United States and its citi
zens are the most generous
group of people in the world.
Sure other countries may
pledge more cash up front,
but how is that relief getting
to the people? Fleets of U.S.
helicopters, the dollar value
of which would dwarf any
other nation’s contribution,
are flying it to them.
Who is going to do most of
the dirty work of cleaning
up and rebuilding the affect
ed countries? That work will
be done by U.S. service
members being ferried to
the area by a U.S. aircraft
carrier battle group, the
value of which would dwarf
the entire annual budgets of
most countries.
Who is going to provide
most of the money to help
rebuild the devastated
areas? I think you are get
ting my drift here.
I know that sometimes
when you hear the constant
criticism of our country
there is the urge to just
throw up your hands and
consign the rest of the world
to the depths of Hades and
suggest that we just go our
own way. That would be
wrong. Isolationism has
never proved to be a good
policy, no matter how often
we have tried to make it
work in the past. As I said
previously, we are all pas
sengers on this rock called
Earth and we have to do our
best to get along with each
other, no matter how hard it
is to do at times.

Should I partition my new hard drive?
Dear TechnoFiles:
I was wondering if my
new hard drive would be
faster if I partitioned it?
It’s a Western Digital 180
gigabyte at 7200 RPM.
Thanks! - Dave
Dear Dave:
Partitioning a hard drive*
would reduce the amount of
slack, or wasted space, that
occurs on the drive. Slack is
due to the fact that the size
of the clusters (the smallest
unit the computer can read
or write to) increases as the
drive volume size increases.
When hard drives were only
40 megabytes in size, this
slack would significantly
reduce the amount of avail
able space on the drive, so
we would partition the drive
to reduce the cluster size.
Nowadays, with hard drives
offering up to 400 gigabytes
of space, we’re not con
cerned with slack anymore.
Chances are you won’t fill
up your new drive anyway,
so why worry about squeez
ing out a few more
megabytes?
Partitioning will not
increase the speed of your
drive, unless being better
organized helps you find
your files faster. There are
many programs that will
only run on the C: volume,
so you’ll have to still install
your program files there.

Editor:
After reading Mr.
Gadbois’ Dec. 31 letter, I
must make my final
remarks of 2004.
His comments humor me.
To enlighten Mr. Gadbois,
most of us “Christians” do
realize that, by his own
admission, 25 percent of the
U.S. population does not
claim Christianity as their
faith.
That leaves a large
majority that does - 75
percent to be exact. So
why would we change a
Christian holiday to a
non-Christian holiday, to
suit a very small popula
tion of non-Christians, by
saying “happy holidays”
instead of “Merry
Christmas”? And why
would non-Christians
WANT to celebrate a
Christian holiday anyway?
If Mr. Gadbois is offended
to see the words “Merry
CHRISTmas” plastered all

Using the D: volume for
your mpeg files or using the
E: volume for your photo
graphs might be useful for
organizing, but why not just
use folders on the C: vol
ume.
It’s important to remem
ber that if you use FDISK to
partition your drive, you
will lose all the data that is
already there - including
your operating system.
You’ll then need to FOR
MAT the drive and reinstall
all your programs and files.
A better solution is to use a
program called
Partition Magic, available
for about S3O on-line or
about S6O in the stores. The
program will allow you to
divide a single hard drive
into two or more partitions,
over the malls and public
places during the Christmas
season, then I would sug

ing to a non-Christian coun
try.

Dear TechnoFiles:
Years ago we were
using Page Maker 6.0 and
CorelDraw 4.0. We were
able to create the art in
CorelDraw, copy it into
Page Maker and combine
it with text. When we
printed it out on our
laser printer, all artwork
and text had nice sharp,
smooth edges, which is
imperative in our busi
ness. Then we bought
new networked Dell
computers with
Windows XP, and

A large majority of our
country still desires and
practices that freedom on a
regular basis. For that mat
ter, it is also the non-believ

But that does not mean that
the non-believer has the
right to change society to
suit themselves.

had to keep one of the
old computers because
we can’t get the smooth

prints out with pixilated

this problem? Or, is
there any way we can

our current Page Maker

The problems you are
describing have to do with
the two ways computers
deal with graphics: vector
images or bitmaps. Both
have their place, but it
sounds like you’ve been
stuck with bitmap images
when you really want vector
images. Bitmaps, also called
raster images, are what we
normally think of as photos
on a computer: .jpg files,
.tiff files, .bmp files, etc.
These images lose detail
and sharpness as you
expand them.
Vector images, however,
are totally different and can
be manipulated and
expanded without loss of
detail because they are
mathematical representa
tions of an image and there
fore don’t lose anything
ship Him. If you don’t want
to celebrate the birth of
Christ, then don’t, but you
also do not have the right to
tell others what they may
believe or say in public.
And for Mr. Gadbois’
information, in my limited

when they are changed. To
crate a vector image in
CorelDraw, you can make
sure you are using vector
drawing tools when creat
ing the image and save it in
a vector image format such
as Corel (*.cdr), or
Encapsulated Post Script
(*.eps), or import a vector
image from a clipart file.
Your other major alterna
tive is to use the CorelTrace
package that is bundled
with CorelDraw to “trace”
the raster image to create a
vector image. As to why you
can’t cut and paste into
newer versions of
Page Maker, make sure you
are using the “Place” com
mand and not paste to
insert your graphics, and
try saving the graphic first
in a vector format and then
importing. A bit more trou
ble, but that might solve
your problem. I hope I hit
on the solution. - Jason
