THE HOUSTON HOME JOURNAL
What if all men were so thoughtful?
“Look at this,” I said,
handing the card and box of
perfume to a friend. She
read the sweet note sent in
thoughtfulness of my birth
day and nodded slowly.
It was obvious she didn’t
understand the grandness of
the gesture.
“That’s my favorite per
fume.” Still, she looked puz
zled. “I went out with him
once when we both spoke at
a convention in Biloxi,
almost two years ago.”
Still, she didn’t get it.
“I was wearing that per
fume that night.” Her eyes
widened. “He remembered.”
A man remembering is
worthy of great admiration
from any woman. Her face
lighted up. She got it! Then,
the look of admiration mor
phed quickly into arched
brow cynicism.
“Yeah, but did he write it
Now is the time for pruning blueberries
The other day, my father
in-law asked me about prun
ing blueberries, and I prom
ised him I would do some
research on the subject for
him. So, this article is for
him - and you if you have
blueberries and have ques
tions about pruning them.
Now is a good time to
prune blueberries.
Blueberries produce fruit on
the previous season’s
growth (one-year old wood).
When left unpruned, berries
will be smaller and of poorer
quality. Thus, blueberries
are pruned so that they keep
producing new growth and
large fruit. Smaller, younger
canes (branches) produce
larger, higher quality fruit.
Blueberries actually need
less pruning than many
other fruit plants, but prun
ing is nevertheless very
important in maintaining
plant vigor. Blueberry plants
are vigorous growers, put
ting on a great deal of new
Being prepared for cold weather
I did something very
unusual this year - I took a
few days off! I even sur
prised myself on enjoying
myself without worrying
about my business for a few
days. I finally realized that
everyone needs a break. We
all need to relax and have a
little time to spend time
with family and friends.
My husband surprised me
by renting a cabin in the
North Georgia Mountains. I
was very excited and looked
forward to this experience.
Then reality set in. If if
snowed, would we have
appropriate clothing? Could
we survive in really cold
weather?
Well, I went into our clos
ets and realized that we
were not ready for cold
weather - much less ice and

growth each year. Pruning
controls fruiting potential
by opening up the canopy of
the plant for maximum sun

overall plant growth,
improving fruit set and size,
as well as enhancing color
development and taste.

not embellishing - but
because he is what we
women dream of always. A
man who will notice the lit
'tle things and use them to
woo us; a man who actually
remembers birthdays and
writes notes laced with
romantic words; a man who
represents Southern courtli
ness at its best; a man who
would never call on your
birthday from a cell phone
with a scratchy signal and
try to yell out best wishes
before the signal vanishes.
“I think you should write
a book for men on how to
remember like this,” I said
to this genetic wonder of
beauty and grace, Paul
Mellor of Richmond, Va. He
thought I was joking.
“Do you think that men
would really buy it?”
It was his turn to joke
around. Poor silly guy. He
berries include:
• To encourage new
growth and plant vigor
• To maximize fruit size
by decreasing fruit load
• To keep plants a man
ageable size for berry pick
ing
• To provide shape and
form to plants
• To remove dead or dis
eased wood
Newly planted blueberry
plants should be cut back to
two-thirds of their original
height and any stray
branches that cross back
toward the center of the
plant should be removed.
During the first growing
season, any fruit buds that
escaped this initial wacking
should be removed so that
the plant will use its water,
and nutrients to develop
new shoots and roots in lieu
of fruit.
Growth on plants two
years old and older should

• waterproof gloves
• long underwear
Now, please understand
that I grew up near the
beach so I do not have a clos
et full of winter clothing.
So, I went out and had FUN
purchasing these items for
the family. I was blessed
because my mother knitted
caps for the boys. Finding
the gloves as well as the long
underwear for them a few
days before Christmas was a
challenge, but those items
were soon crossed off the
list.
Off we went on Christmas
Eve to the mountains. I had
the boys SO EXCITED
about snow and ice that they
could not sleep. I guess you
have quickly figured out
that it did not snow at all

has no idea what a rarity he
is. Few men are interested
enough to buy a book that
will improve romantic rela
tionships. It is the common
male belief that ‘hardly at
all’ is ‘plenty enough’ when
it comes to seducing women
with romantic gestures.
“No,” I replied. “But
women will buy it by the
handfuls and you’ll have a
runaway bestseller.”
I mean it.
If we can teach men to
remember the little-but-oh
so-important things, we will
have accomplished some
thing greater than putting a
man on the moon. It is inter
esting the things they for
get. That’s why so many
women choose to marry on
Valentine’s Day. Since com
mercialism is tremendous
leading up to that day, it is
possible, a woman will sur-
be maintained by the
removal of any low-growing,
lateral branches and any
weak, diseased, or damaged
wood before plants begin
growing in the spring. This
should be done in January
and February. Blueberries
may also need pruning each
year after harvest. For
example, removing about
one-third of the length of
the tallest shoots to enable
them to support the fruit
produced the following year
is generally a good idea.
When plants reach matu
rity, after eight to ten years,
some of the old canes will
need to be removed each
year so that they can be
replaced with new growth.
This is called cane renewal
or renewal pruning, and it
helps to keep the plants
healthy and vigorous. As a
rule, remove one to three of
the oldest, tallest canes each
winter or about 20% of the
canopy.
while we were there. In
fact, it did get cold but the
only water that froze was
the water in the birdbath.
Oh well, you never know.
My husband teased me
about all the extra items I
purchased for the trip. He
did not give me a really hard
time about it, but he did
wonder why I purchased the
waterproof boots for me. I
told him that my foot will
not be growing any more so
they should last me a LONG
time.
My one piece of advice to
each of you is to have these
items on hand. I now have a
storage box for only winter
items such as waterproof
gloves, thick socks and long
underwear. We will be ready
for the next winter trip we
take!

mise, that he’ll remember
their anniversary. If he for
gets one, he’ll forget the
other, which means that
they will only have one big
fight rather than two.
It is sad that we women
have to go to such extremes
to keep harmony and to
spare our own feelings. My
friend, Julie, is married to a
man who has the same
birthday as she does. He
always remembers his birth
day and always forgets hers.
She is a good woman - bet
ter than me - because she
has been able to look past
this and stay married to him
for 14 years of missed birth
days.
I am convinced that Paul
has a special secret that
should be shared with the
world for the sake of wom
anhood as well as mankind.
