Beltran cold join Mets
NEW YORK (AP) - Carlos
Beltran is on the verge of follow
ing Pedro Martinez to the New
York Mets.
A day after the All-Star out
fielder let the deadline to re-sign
with Houston pass, he reached
a preliminary agreement Sunday
night on a sll9 million, seven
year contract with the Mets that
includes an sll million signing
bonus.
The Mets, who haven't made
the playoffs since 2000, just
last month lured Martinez from
the Boston Red Sox with a $53
million, four-year deal. They
declined comment on their talks
with Beltran.

for each season, the amount
of deferred payments and the
schedule of when the money will
be paid.
Batista to piay h Japan
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican
Republic (AP) - Third baseman
Tony Batista will play in Japan
next season after hitting 32 hom
ers and knocking in 110 runs with
the Montreal Expos last year.
The free agent said Sunday
the Fukuoka Hawks will pay him
sls million for two years - a $5
million signing bonus in addition
to $5 million in each of the next
two seasons.
Batista said he signed the deal
last week in Miami. Fukuoka has
not confirmed the deal although
it was announced by Batista
and his agents. The 31-year-old
Dominican said he will travel to
Japan at the end of the month.
Appleby whs back-to-back
KAPALUA, Hawaii (AP) - Stuart
Appleby became the first back-to
back winner in 22 years at the
Mercedes Championships, clos
ing with a 6-under 67 and letting
Vijay Singh and Ernie Els make
all the mistakes Sunday.
Appleby almost didn't return
to defend his title because of a
nerve injury in his left thigh, but
he made the trip worthwhile, and
it will be even sweeter going home
to Australia. His wife is expecting
their first child this week.
He didn't look like a winner
until the back nine on a rainy,
windy day at Kapalua.
Appleby opened with a 74,
becoming the first winner in seven
years at Kapalua to have a round
over par. And he never birdied
the par-4 18th all week, but that
didn't matter.
Els needed a birdie on the 18th
to force a playoff, but his tee shot
sailed far to the right, bounced
high off the cart path and disap
peared into trees and rough for a
two-shot penalty.
Kobe accuser voices out
DENVER (AP) - The woman
who accused Los Angeles Lakers
star Kobe Bryant of rape wants a
public airing of her federal lawsuit
as soon as possible.
Attorney L. Lin Wood said
Sunday that his client decided
against filing a second, paral
lel suit in California state court
because of fears that legal
maneuvers there would delay a
trial in the suit in federal court in
Denver.
The woman’s lawsuit seeks
unspecified financial damages
for pain, ridicule and scorn she
says she has suffered since her
encounter with Bryant in a Vail
area resort in June 2003.

Jason Campbell, Georgia's David

Andrew Walter will share quarter
back duties for the South team in
this month's Senior Bowl.
The North quarterbacks are
three top NFL prospects: Akron's
Charlie Frye, Connecticut’s Dan
Orlovsky and Purdue’s Kyle

Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach
Jon Gruden will coach the South
in the Jan. 29 game at Ladd-
Peebles Stadium. Norv Turner of

LONDON (AP) - A team of
part-time players including paint
ers, decorators and a computer
analyst managed to hold Premier
League club Newcastle scoreless
for a half before losing 2-0 in the
FA Cup on Sunday.
The part-timers on Yeading
needed six games to reach the
third round of the famed FA Cup,
which is open to all English soc
cer clubs.
When Yeading drew Newcastle,
ranked six leagues higher, it was
the biggest gap ever between
teams in the FA Cup. Yeading,
given odds of 20,000-1 of win
ning the tournament, plays in the
Ryman League Premier Division.

SEATTLE (AP) - The St. Louis Rams
can say they're the first 8-8 team to win in
the playoffs.
Marc Bulger threw for 313 yards and
two touchdowns, the last a 17-yarder to
Cam Cleeland with 2:11 to play Saturday,
leading the Rams to a 27-20 win over
Seattle and making St. Louis the first 8-8
to win in the playoffs.
The Rams, who have now beaten the
Seahawks three times this season, appear
to be taking flight at the right time. They
won their final two games to reach the
playoffs, with Bulger throwing for a sea
son-high 450 yards and three TDs in last
weekend's 32-29 overtime defeat of the
New York Jets.
Bulger completed 18-of-32 attempts
with one interception. Torry Holt caught six
passes for 108 yards and one score, and
Curtis had four receptions for 107 yards
receiving.
Hasselbeck finished 27-of-43 for 341
yards passing with two TDs and one inter
ception. Darrell Jackson had a great day,
catching 12 passes for 128 yards receiving
and one TD.

Falcons' Hall hopes for return

- Cory Hall wants to savor
his first postseason experi
ence as a player, not a fan.
A sixth-year safety in
his second season with the
Atlanta Falcons, Hall is still
recovering from a concus
sion he sustained Jan. 2 at
Seattle. He participated in
Atlanta’s only practices last
week, but his vision was
distorted both Thursday
and Friday.
When the Falcons return
Monday to begin preparing
for their second-round play
off game Saturday night,
Hall hopes he can see clear

“l could remember stuff,”
Hall said. “My problem was
trying to focus. That was
the hard part.”
The timing of Hall’s
concussion could’ve been
worse, but only because
Atlanta (11-5) earned a
first-round playoff bye and
was off last week. With the
Falcons hosting St. Louis
on Saturday night, Hall
wants to take his place in
the starting lineup.
His eagerness is under
standable after playing on
Cincinnati and Atlanta
teams that went a combined
21-59 in the first five years
of his career. None of those
clubs managed a winning
record, much less a playoff
appearance.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Take away
his favorite option and Peyton Manning
doesn't pout. He simply destroys you
somewhere else, setting records along
the way.
With Marvin Harrison shut down early,
Manning went to Reggie Wayne and
Dallas Clark in building an insurmountable

Indianapolis' 49-24 victory over Denver.

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Chad Pennington's

in this league, it was lose,

the ball, I want to seize the
opportunity and help us get
as far as we can.”
Part of the Falcons’ prob
lems on defense last year,
when they allowed a fran
chise-record 6,108 yards,
was a disfigured secondary
that began the season with

Williams at cornerback.

A 1-6 start caused the for
mer coaching staff to move
Hall to free safety and bench
the others. Rookie Bryan
Scott, misplaced as a nickel
cornerback, took over at
strong safety. Juran Bolden
and Tod Mcßride, who no
longer play for Atlanta,
started at cornerback.
The second half of the sea
son was much more respect
able, but the arrival of new
head coach Jim Mora and
defensive coordinator Ed

the Falcons to scrap their
3-4 front and use a conven

New York into range for Doug Brien's 28-

Pennington threw two touchdowns for

Raptors 109, Warriors 87
TORONTO (AP) - Chris Bosh had 21
points and a career-high 17 rebounds
and Rafer Alston ended a shooting slump
with 14 second-half points, leading the
Toronto Raptors to a 109-87 victory over
the Golden State Warriors on Sunday.
Clifford Robinson had 18 points for
the Warriors, who have lost five straight
without leading scorer Jason Richardson
(sprained left ankle).
If Hall meets NFL-man
dated requirements and
passes his next concussion
test, he will be in uniform at
the Georgia Dome Saturday
night.
There’s no question that
the Falcons are a better
base defense with Hall at
free safety. In two starts
Hall missed with a sprained
foot, Atlanta went 1-1 at
Kansas City and Denver,
allowing 84 total points and
1,107 net yards.
Those numbers can be
misleading, given that
Falcons defensive coordina
tor Ed Donatell deployed
a lot of nickel and dime
packages after the Broncos
allowed 31 unanswered
points and spent most of
the game playing catch-up.
Hall usually leaves the field
when Donatell makes nickel
and dime calls.
Without Hall at free safe
ty, however, reserve Kevin
McCadam lacks the experi
ence to recognize some for
mations and readjust the
coverage.
Atlanta plays a lot of
zones in the secondary, and
the free safety is respon
sible for lining up comer
backs DeAngelo Hall and
Jason Webster and decides
whether Bryan Scott should
adjust if Donatell hasn’t told
the strong safety to blitz.
“Cory’s had a good year,”
Donatell said. “We expect a
lot out of all our starters,
and he’s certainly met the
criteria we want.”
